I haven't written anything for the HOWDOWE challenge so, I'm going to rec something by [livejournal.com profile] mrua7. I've chosen this because 'Guy Fawkes Night' is a British holiday.

Remember, Remember the Fifth of November by [livejournal.com profile] mrua7

(As an aside - Although I know the plotters were intending on terrible destruction, I have to feel a little sorry for the ringleader of the group. The plot will forever have Guido Fawkes' name attached to it, with people never remembering Robert Catesby.)

I know we're on a bit of a hiatus, officially, with Writer's Choice.  But I'm missing seeing the pages full of shared stories, so perhaps something unofficial.
I was thinking about some of our past seasonal challenges, and I admit to favoring our HODOWE Challenges.  That is Holidays of Dubious Origins Writing Event.  The topic for this one is Left Handers Days, and you'll find more of them by following the tags.
I think I've actually highlighted this particular holiday previously, but it seems worthwhile to do it again.
Please check out the stories in HODOWE, and post something you'd like to share.  It's an Unofficial Story Sharing Day.  Just because we can.
I hope you enjoy...

"Sweets for sweetest day, mister?" the pretty blonde standing outside headquarters smiled at Napoleon innocently, holding out a tray of little boxes of chocolates, wrapped in silver foil and topped off with a delicate pink ribbon.

"Sweetest day, huh?" he asked as he took one, giving her an admiring look.

"Yes," she nodded vigorously. "We're giving out free samples for a new chocolatier's that's opening just down the block - Kimbles. He makes the best chocolates. The pineapple cream is amazing, I can't stop eating them."

For HODOWE/Sweetest Day
..................................................

"What's that in your hand?" Napoleon could see a small box in his partner's hand, and a scowl on the Russian's face.

"I believe it is another box of candy.  Emily from Translations handed it to me and kissed me on the cheek." Illya looked slightly bewildered by all of the attention he'd been receiving.  Some strange date on the calendar had apparently given all of the women at Headquarters the right to fondle him and shove boxes of candy at him.

"It is Sweetest Day tovarisch, a benign little holiday concocted by candy salesmen.  The girls just want an excuse to see what you're made of."  Napoleon was enjoying his friend's discomfort; all of this attention was taxing to the young man from the Soviet Union.

"But it is entirely too familiar, Napoleon.  This type of thing would never happen…"

The LIFECYCLE: FEAR Challenge, the last challenge in the LIFECYCLE series, is now "in the books". Thanks to all who participated! So we move on to the final seasonal challenge of the year, the third HODOWE (e.g. HOLIDAYS OF DUBIOUS ORIGINS WRITING EVENT) challenge. This HODOWE centers on SWEETEST DAY!

Here are the guidelines for the HODOWE: Sweetest Day seasonal challenge.

CHALLENGE: Write an MFU fanfic story regarding the ideas embodied in Sweetest Day. The story doesn't have to necessarily mention or include the day by name; just embody a scenario that fits the concept behind it. SWEETEST DAY isn't an international holiday of course. Truthfully it isn't even any sort of nationally recognized holiday in the U.S. It is observed in only 14 states and in parts of 2 other states (including NY). It is traditionally celebrated on the third Saturday in October.

The first Sweetest Day was pronounced as October 8, 1921 in Cleveland by a committee of 12 confectioners who saw to the distribution of over 20,000 boxes of candy to "newsboys, orphans, old folks, and the poor". On September 25, 1937, The New York Times reported that The National Confectioners Association had launched a "movement throughout the candy industry" to rank Sweetest Day with the nationally accepted Mother's Day, Father's Day, and St. Valentine's Day. That never happened, but friends, family, and lovers often give each other candy, flowers, and cards on Sweetest Day. It doesn't have quite the... commitment overtones associated with Valentine's Day, however. So seems a holiday that would tickle the fancy of Napoleon Solo, no? ;-)

One further note: Since Sweetest Day was invented by commercial interests which stood to profit from such a holiday, dissenting Cleveland residents refer to it as a "Hallmark holiday" (although it was not invented by Hallmark Cards company). Now wouldn't Illya Kuryakin have some biting remarks to make about such a particularly "capitalist holiday"? ;-)

STATISTICAL STUFF: Minimum of 500 words with no set maximum. (Drabbles are not incorporated in this particular challenge.) Must fit into the overall concepts of this community, i.e., contain no explicit adult material and reflect the 1960s series in style and content. Please tag your story with the hodowe and sweetest tags.

POSTING: To this forum starting on Saturday, October 17th, and ending on Saturday, October 24th.

War-1

Two men stood side by side, dressed in period costumes from the American Revolutionary war. Dark blue jackets, with brass buttons, white breeches, stockings and tri-cornered hats on their heads.

In their arms were balanced replicas of rifles from the time period. They looked all the part and ready to reenact one of the first battles of the war that took place at 6 a.m. on Lexington Green in Lexington Massachusetts.

Yet there was an obvious problem with their attire; one of them was wearing a pair of black laced Oxfords shoes, while the other man, a shaggy-haired blond, was wearing a pair of black loafers; neither of which were anywhere near the kind of footwear worn during the time period.

The LIFECYCLE: Knowledge challenge is in the books. Thanks to all who participated! So now comes the third seasonal challenge of the year, the second HODOWE (e.g. HOLIDAYS OF DUBIOUS ORIGINS WRITING EVENT) challenge. This HODOWE centers on PATRIOTS' DAY!

Here are the guidelines for the HODOWE: Patriots' Day seasonal challenge.

CHALLENGE: Write an MFU fanfic story regarding the ideas embodied in Patriots' Day. The story doesn't have to necessarily mention or include the day by name; just embody a scenario that fits the concept behind it. PATRIOTS DAY isn't an international holiday of course, but it isn't even really any sort of nationally recognized holiday in the U.S. It is observed strictly in the states of Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Maine, with observance also "encouraged" in Florida. Prior to 1969, it was celebrated on April 19th. Since 1969, it has been celebrated on the third Monday in April. It was initiated to commemorate the Battles of Lexington and Concord fought during the American Revolutionary War; so some general ideas for the challenge would include (1) the ideals of the American Revolution, (2) memoriam of those who fought for national independence anywhere and anytime, and (3) personal liberties. And of course the Boston Marathon takes place on this day and has every year since 1897; so there is a natural tie-in there as well.

STATISTICAL STUFF: Minimum of 500 words with no set maximum. (Drabbles are not incorporated in this particular challenge.) Must fit into the overall concepts of this community, i.e., contain no explicit adult material and reflect the 1960s series in style and content. Please tag your story with the hodowe and patriots tags.

*Ben Franklin invented the bifocal lens when he became annoyed with having to switch back and forth from regular to reading glasses.  Things haven't changed much ;)

A circle of women were standing at the end of the corridor, the voice of one lone speaker rising above the hum of air conditioning and whatever else ran through the walls of Headquarters.  Napoleon Solo walked past and inclined his ear in hopes of hearing what was being said without appearing too nosey.

"It is true, I saw him trying them on.  He looked like John Lennon with those round lenses.  Well, actually he looked quite nice."

A litter of giggles went up and then a collective sigh.

Napoleon Solo led the way as he and his partner made their way knee-deep through the muck-filled sewage tunnel. The none too tasteful path would allow them a back-door entrance to a small red brickface building in Philadelphia...or so the old map that Kuryakin held seemed to indicate.

Neither man was dressed for the occasion, though they managed to procure boots to protect themselves as they stepped into the water of the Wingshocking sewer system, filled with only who knew what.

The smell however, was a pretty good indicator as to what it was…
