I hadn't realised just how close the 1960 election was until I read the transcript of Alistair Cooke's November 1972 "Letter from America" last week. I read it in a magazine and can't find the text on-line but the progamme is available on the BBC web site (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00yqkx0). Apparently they had to wait until California and Hawaii were in to know that Kennedy had won. The computers thought Nixon had won for most of the night.
