Childhood Dreams - A Little Drabble Do Ya! - 13 April

Childhood Dreams

The assignment was over, leaving them a few hours to pass at the ranch before their flight to New York. Napoleon leaned on the fence, idly chewing a stem of grass and watching a cattleman on horseback corral the herd.

"I always fancied being a cowboy when I grew up," he commented to the partner at his side, "how about you, Illya, what did you want to be when you were a kid?"

Illya thought back on his childhood, played out on the war-torn streets of Kiev and underpinned by the persistent ache of hunger.

Finally, he answered.

"An adult."

What a wonderfully bitter sweet drabble. Some dreams are a lot less fun-filled than others.

This was wonderful! And sad. Not everyone gets to dream of being a cowboy or an astronaut...

Strangely, it reminded me of a story a former coworker told me.

She was an older woman ( 70's) and went for a job interview at a well known department store. The person interviewing her was a young girl in her mid-twenties, obviously not very adept at interviewing. She asked the older woman the question: "Where do you picture yourself five years from now?"

My friend didn't miss a beat and replied "Alive, I hope."

My heart ached for a second... imagine the distress of a child in that awful situation.

So did I, IK. Very well done!
