It's getting to be a tradition with me to repost this story for each Memorial Day.

Let us remember and honor those around the world who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We can only hope that one day such sacrifices will no longer be necessary, and that giobal peace will reign.

Thank you so much. Most people do find it very moving. I think I originally wrote it for Memorial Day in 2013. I wanted to write a more solemn and moving piece as Memorial Day has turned into an unofficial start to summer here, and I think people forget what the holiday is truly meant to be.

So when someone wishes me a "Happy Memorial Day" I ask them if they know the meaning of the holiday. Today a young girl behind a counter didn't know... She had no idea. Sad really. She was perhaps 18-20 years old.
