Yes still but medical knowledge did have it's limitations back then. I always bugs me when the writer doesn't do their homework. If you're going to write a piece of fiction that takes place in a certain period, it begs to be researched just from an historical point of view....unless it's venturing into the world of AU, where you can get away with things being 'off.'
