"Stranger than fiction" Chapter 2 ~ A call and response continuation of The Short Affair Challenge.
Chapter one begun by Glennagirl: Here.
Medical personnel dashed into the Russian’s room, pushing Solo aside.
They quickly worked in silence, each knowing their job and performing with it practiced precision.
Illya was hooked up to a heart monitor once the bleeding was brought under control, and the wound bandaged.
It was when Napoleon observed them inserting a pic line and a hanging a bag of blood that he found himself swallowing hard. Had Illya lost that much blood?
Things had finally calmed enough for him to ask the trepidatious doctor some questions.
“Doc, why did he start to bleed so badly and did he lose that much blood that he needs more?”
“Mr. Solo, I’ve never seen anything like this. Granted I’m trying to keep myself from thinking the word ‘vampire’ but this is so strange. I have no precedent to help me wrap my head around this. Mr. Kuryakin began bleeding because his blood was failing to clot. It was as if he’d been given some sort of massive anti-coagulant. It makes no sense. The only thing I can compare it to is when a snake bites a person and injects it’s venom into its victim. What would cause this with your friend has me completely baffled.”
“You mean you think he was injected with something?”
“I’m not really sure, but it’s the only logical explanation I can find. I’m convinced he was injected with something through that bite as I can’t locate any injection site on his body. We also have another problem to deal with if indeed Mr. Kuryakin’s blood continues to fail to clot; we have no supplies of B negative blood, which is his type. I’m going to have the hosptial see if more can be located...you by any chance wouldn’t be the same type would you?”
“No, but I have type O. Isn’t that the universal donor? Can’t I give my blood?
“We've already given him type O blood but it doesn't seem to be helping his blood to coagulate again. Let me explain,” the doctor rubbed his forehead before beginning.”There are four major blood groups determined by the presence or absence of two antigens, A and B on the surface of red blood cells. Group A has only the A antigen on red cells and B antibody in the plasma , group B has only the B antigen on red cells and A antibody in the plasma, group AB has both A and B antigens on red cells, but neither A nor B antibody in the plasma, group O has neither A nor B antigens on red cells, but both A and B antibody are in the plasma.”
Napoleon listened intently but the doctor was losing him quickly.
“In addition to the A and B antigens, there is a third antigen called the Rh factor, which can be either present (+) or absent ( – ). In general, Rh negative blood is given to Rh negative patients, and Rh positive blood or Rh negative blood may be given to Rh positive patients. The universal red cell donor has Type O negative blood type as in your case, however, the universal plasma donor has Type AB positive blood type.”
Napoleon shook his head in confusion. “So what are you saying?"
“Some patients require a closer blood match than that provided by the ABO positive/negative blood typing. For example, sometimes if the donor and recipient are from the same ethnic background the chance of a reaction can be reduced. In this case I'm convinced that we need Mr. Kuryakin’s specific blood type and Rh factor from someone of Slavic background. In otherwords an exact match. That’s going to take some time to locate I’m afraid.”
Hours later Doctor Wilson called Napoleon over for a consult. His demeanor did not evoke a feeling of confidence in the U.N.C.L.E. agent.
“Mr. Solo, I’m afraid I don’t have good news, actually it’s more bizarre news if you ask me. It seems there’s been an influx of patients to local hospitals with the same symptoms as Mr. Kuryakin and here’s the kicker...they all have the same blood type as your friend.”
Okay, who want's to do chapter 3?
