I wrote this for a Halloween challenge some years ago. It's also available at AO3.

I thought it would be appropriate if Illya told a story with a socialist theme.

The Bargain

New York City, Halloween night, 1964

"… And there it was — the hook — still attached to the outside handle of the passenger door…"

As he finished his story, George Dennel sat back in his chair, feeling very pleased with himself. He wanted to add an evil laugh at the end, but thought better of it. He wasn’t very good at evil laughter anyway.

The small group that was gathered in the commissary of U.N.C.L.E. HQ offered polite nods and smiles. Mandy even clapped. It wasn’t quite the reaction he’d expected.

"That’s an old one, George,” Napoleon Solo observed from behind the nearby counter where he was mixing drinks for all of them. "Everyone’s heard it before." It was long after the dinner hour and except for the janitor mopping up the floors, the kitchen staff was gone for the night.

"Really?" George asked, genuinely surprised.

"In my country," Illya Kuryakin informed him, "it’s a scythe hanging on the side of a hay wagon."

How About Those Halloween Prompts?

I'm going to get out of my lane a little and put in a plug for the Halloween Challenge over on mfu_scrapbook
There's quite a few prompts over there that are still unclaimed, and I'm thinking some of the writers here on Section VII just haven't noticed. Am I right? Because, let's face it, we do that here... writing.
We'll be having our own Seven Days of Halloween, but let's not forget to support writing for MFU when we see the opportunity.
It's a fact of life that there are fewer people participating now than in years past, but the fires of the fandom are present even if in need of some stoking.
So, if you haven't already, take a look at the prompts and see if anything calls out to you. Several of our members/writers here on Section VII have submitted story prompts (myself included), so it's a little like answering a challenge here in our own playground.
If you've been there once already but need a second look, here's where to find them... Halloween prompts

This is a writing season for us if you take a look at what's coming up in the next few months. And there will be a Christmas Round Robin once again, so take a deep breath and start typing.

The prompt:

They approached their destination as it finally appeared through the dense cloud cover. Located high atop a cliff, it was an old two story Victorian house perched in precarious position on the edge of precipice.

Their only means of getting there was climbing a series of stairs cut into the cliff face but where that wasn’t possible a metal staircase had been installed.

“Who in their right mind would put a house in such a precarious spot...that is of course a rhetorical question,” Illya commented.

“Definitely one who thinks outside the box,”Napoleon replied. “And how the heck did they get the materials up here to even build it….wait, helicopter? Then again this house looks pretty old for that to have been…”

“Stoi...stop,” Illya said. “Do you hear it?”
