As America celebrates, which is an odd phrase considering the subject of this holiday, I think we can explore the ways in which UNCLE honors those who have fallen in the line of duty. Some live to suffer out the consequences of a THRUSH experiment, perhaps wishing they had died at the scene rather than endure this sort of after life among the living.

This story. written by st_crispins, explores that side of UNCLE, and will give you a good read for this Memorial Day.

“I was just thinking about Thanksgiving this year. Be interesting to visit – celebrate the Pilgrim Fathers' voyage.”

Napoleon took a seat at the table and interrupted his jaunty whistling long enough to offer a greeting. Faustina smiled distractedly as she monitored the sugar cascading from the dispenser into her coffee cup. Illya grunted from behind his newspaper. Napoleon whistled more loudly and tapped an accompaniment on the table.

“Evidently you are waiting for one of us to ask why you are so chipper,” Illya said without moving the paper.

“Umm-hmm.”

“And you will continue to make irritating noises until we do?”

“Smart Russian.”

It was April 1st, the day anyone working in U.N.C.L.E. headquarters in New York dreaded. There was an inner core of personnel who prided themselves on playing pranks and practical jokes, the worst and most devious among them was Napoleon Solo. He had a wicked sense of humor and being the master tactician that he was, he could get the best of anyone.

I hope all my friends and cousins who celebrate this day of thanks will have a wonderful time!

Whether with friends and family or alone, it's all about being grateful for everything in life with which we have been blessed. No talk of politics today, no talk of anything negative, just gathering to celebrate the love of family and friends with good food, and love.

In the hustle and bustle of preparing for today, and for all the craziness of the Christmas shopping season being slammed in our faces, the real message of the holiday season can easily be lost.

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving!

“Mardi Gras is steeped in tradition as well my friend and not just about the frolics. Its King Cakes, Krewes, Grand Balls, parades, costumes, throwing of Doubloons, beads, lots of other trinkets and fabulous music are all just a part of the big picture.” Napoleon smiled, then laughed as one of those scantily clad women tossed a handful of beads and doubloons, hitting his partner right in the face with them.

He reached down, grabbing the Mardi Gras treats, draping the beads over his and Illya’s head, and stuffed a few the commemorative coins into his jacket pocket as keepsakes.

It was Mardi Gras time in New Orleans and having a few days off, Napoleon Solo dragged his partner there to experience a bit of Americana and Louisiana tradition.

“I do not understand, you Americans have so many obscure holidays, Groundhog Day, National Anthem Day, Johnny Appleseed Day, Liberty Day, Maple Syrup Saturday but mind you, is nowhere near National Pancake Day and neither is close to National Maple Syrup Day.”

“Not to mention New Year's Day, Chinese New Year, Abraham Lincoln's Birthday,George Washington's Birthday, St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Arbor Day, Easter, April Fool's Day, Mother's Day Memorial, Day, Flag Day, Father's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day.”

He paused to take a breath. “Labor Day, Columbus Day, Halloween, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas. It boggles the mind... and oh yes, lest I forget this Mardi Gras. These holidays all reek of nothing but attempts by capitalistic greeting card companies and retail shops to bilk the people of their hard earned kopeks...umm, I meant money.”

"Are you finished?" Solo looked at him with amazement."Okya, I get the picture," he added, stopping his partner from going on ad nauseum."You know you can really be a party pooper sometimes."

“I am sure I could recall more if you like,” he grinned at the American, knowing full well he was annoying him just a little. “

“That’s not exactly the over-indulgence I had in mind," Napoleon mumbled.

"A new experience for Illya"

It was Independance Day and for once Napoleon Solo had off for the holiday. He decided to take out his boat, a thirty-footer named the Pursang, to get a better view of the many fireworks display that went off up and down along the shoreline.

Unless a call to arms for an assignment appeared, and it usually did, Solo planned to enjoy a four day weekend beginning with the holiday on Thursday.

To add to his plans he’d invited a dozen or so people to accompany him on board. There’d be food and drink a plenty. Ladies from UNCLE, a number of field agents and people from security were arriving two and three at a time.

Solo greeted them, told them to make themselves comfy and grab a drink, all the while he was glancing at his wristwatch, noting the time.

Napoleon has unique plan to rescue his lost partner...

“Come on, tovarich! You’ve been asleep far too long.”

It was true. Six days in a coma from a head injury had left Illya Kuryakin flat on his back in Medical. The doctors were concerned that with each passing day, the chances of him making any kind of recovery were deteriorating.

At least there were no bullet holes or knife wounds this time; no bleeding or broken bones.

The mission turned out to be a success; highly prized documents were recovered but he’d been knocked out by a rather large THRUSH ape. Solo, while engaged with another THRUSH thug, only caught a glimpse of the attack on his cohort which had been a light tap on the noggin. He was surprised to see the blond go down at all. It was the fall that did him in, Napoleon assumed; the Ukrainians head smacked the back of a metal chair and then the even harder wooden floor. Two goose-egg sized lumps and unconsciousness were his reward.

Now, a disheveled and sleep-deprived Napoleon Solo hovered over his friend and partner; relinquishing every spare moment of his time to be at the Soviet’s bedside. Skipped meals and foregone sleep except for light naps in the uncomfortable bedside recliner, he was looking the worse for wear and the doctors were close to kicking him out so he would at least get a few hours of decent rest at home. They feared Napoleon would become ill himself if he didn’t start taking better care.

It was Father’s Day and one of the few occasions, along with Mother’s Day, Christmas and Easter that Alexander Waverly made a concerted effort to keep himself available to his family.

Through the years his wife Estelle had become quite accustomed to her husband’s late and long hours, and their children always seemed happy despite the lack of their father’s presence.
