Mark Slate trudged into Napoleon Solo’s office with a sigh.

“Snow’s coming down really heavy mate. Everything’s pretty much shutting down out there. Don’t you think it’s time to call it a day even though it’s only two o’clock.”

“That’s all it is?” Napoleon looked up from the pile of folders in front of him. “Time doesn’t fly when you’re doing paperwork.”

It was then that it became apparent to the Brit that Kuryakin wasn’t there at his desk.

“Where’s our resident Russian?”

Friends, Russians, countrymen

He ran into him on his way to meet Napoleon, who was waiting in the car down in the garage. The tall Englishman was coming out of the elevator.

“Illya, my old mucker! Good to see you again. You haven’t changed a bit. How are you?”

“Very well, thank you,” Illya replied coolly. “How are you, Mark?”

“Extremely well, and raring to go.” Mark said, and continued, chattily, “I heard you were here, of course. Never would have thought we’d end up on the same side, eh?”

That all-too familiar, breezy bonhomie of the privately-educated English male, speaking in the cut-glass accents of the upper-classes, with their implicit put-down of lesser mortals – or serfs, in his case. His old mucker, indeed. He knew what that odd expression meant now. A place at Cambridge didn’t make you equal, they made sure of that.

“No,” he replied. “It must be strange to find that even Russians take any kind of moral view of the world.”

“I didn’t mean...” said Mark awkwardly, “don’t be like that, Illya … you know how it was at Cambridge… Secret Service recruiters and all that.”

“Yes. I do know.”

For the third time in a week, Napoleon walked into the commissary and found it almost devoid of any female staff. The first couple of times, he’d put it down to the gloriously warm and sunny weather. He’d recently learned that many of the secretaries liked to eat lunch in a nearby public garden*. Today though, the rain was torrential, so he’d expected the commissary to be fuller.

Napoleon and Illya winced in sympathy as they watched Mark Slate negotiate his crutches around the commissary tables. He’d recently had his tibia broken in an altercation with a THRUSH goon.

“We should get medals for this job,” he moaned, as he sat down. “What’s that one the U.S. military give to the wounded?”

“The Purple Heart,” Solo told him. “I’m afraid, thanks to our Russian friend here, the idea is unfeasible.”

“What do you mean?” Illya asked, his eyes narrowing with suspicion.

“With your injury list, manufacturing the medals would be a full time industry. UNCLE couldn’t afford it.”

Glancing nonchalantly around the restaurant, April Dancer asked her partner how they were supposed to recognize their contact. There were at least fifty diners, a dozen wait staff and the Maitre d’. The contact, who was to give them a micro-film, could be anyone of them.

“No idea, love,” Mark Slate replied, as he thanked their waiter for the starters he’d brought to them. “All Napoleon would say was that we’d know them.”

Illya Kuryakin was woken from his own fitful slumber by the distressed sobs of his temporary partner. In the bright white moonlight, which flooded their hotel room, he could clearly see that Mark Slate was in the grip of a nightmare. The Russian was no stranger to nightmares himself, and had the feeling that Mark’s were born of the same source as his own; more or less anyway. This was verified when the Brit suddenly called out for his Daddy.

Illya’s abductors had no idea that U.N.C.L.E agents were on their tail, and therefore felt there was no danger in stopping for coffee. They were so confident in fact, that both operatives, and all four guards, went into the first diner they came across. Their cars were left entirely unguarded. Not that Illya was aware of that. All he knew was that they had stopped but, having little room to manoeuvre, he couldn’t free himself. He managed only to wriggle into a position where he could kick out at whoever opened the trunk. He wasn’t comfortable, and it would do him no good in the long run, but it was a matter of pride. It was shameful to him that he’d been taken so easily in the first place.

It took Mark Slate an hour to get to the hotel, where he found Napoleon sitting in the garden.

“Alright Mate,” he called out. “No luck then?”

Napoleon shook his head at the Brit and explained that he’d looked into every room in the hotel and searched the garden three times.

It’s a complete mystery, Mark,” he told the other agent. “Illya has just disappeared from the face of the Earth.”

As his words, a loud rumble of thunder echoed across the sky. Both men automatically looked up.

A few days later, April was walking down the hall to purchase a magazine for Mark and nodded a silent greeting to an unknown man she passed. That is, unknown until she heard him speak to someone a moment later. Trawler, but now with the bandages removed, he had a very different face.

April forced herself to maintain the same pace and not draw attention to herself, but she knew they had stumbled onto one of THRUSH's reasons for this convalescence home. The other patients were acting as cover for some of their agents coming to have plastic surgery.

After the fourth time of trying to contact Illya, Napoleon Solo realised his plans for the evening were going out of the window. His partner was only meant to observe the house and report back on which member of THRUSH central was arriving. Once the name was known, a different set of agents would take over the assignment. Solo briefly entertained the thought that it might be simple equipment failure. As much as he hoped that was the case, he had to treat is as something suspicious.

“Call Slate and Dancer and ask them to meet me in Mr Waverly’s office,” he told Mary, who was manning the communications desk. “And keep trying Illya.”

Mark had a terrible headache to go along with his broken nose and black eye. And he certainly was not above making April feel guilty over it even if he did fully understand why she'd done it.

Not that April needed nudging to feel guilty. She fussed over Mark, fetching him a glass of water so he could take a dose of pain medication before his next trip to the whirlpool. She held her breath as they passed the THRUSHie - Trawler by name - in the hall. Trawler looked Mark straight in the face - and showed no signs of recognition.

Thinking back on the THRUSHie, April was relieved to recall that she had been disguised - different hair color and style. Mark, however, had looked like Mark. Disguising him now was out of the question so she closed her eyes, took a deep breath, then suddenly flailed out her arm, striking Mark hard in the nose.

Naturally, Mark let out a loud yelp and April started blabbering as Mark raised one of his hands to his now bloody nose.

"Oh my heavens! How clumsy of me!"

Bruising was already forming under his eyes by the time a doctor reset his nose.
