NaNoWriMo Check In - Week 1

I'm doing NaNoWriMo again this year. My local group rallied together last year and made our own November novel writing event when the "official" organization went under (info here but the tldr is that they made some truly terrible decisions, including multiple alleged crimes, before finally shutting down). We've become even more organized this year, with our own website and discord server and plenty of in-person events. I'm so happy we were able to save our little group because it's meant a lot to me over the years.

I set my initial goal for the month at 25k - half of what a normal NaNo goal is. This is so I don't burn myself out, as my work has become really busy and I've been dealing with some family health emergencies the last few months. I figured if I do manage to hit the 25k before the month ends, I can switch to 50k as a stretch goal.

Week one is over now and I'm actually really happy (and surprised) by the progress I made so far. Not only am I on track for my 25k goal, but I'm also currently on track for completing the full 50k goal! As of finishing writing on Nov 9th, my total word count is at 16,272. Not sure if I'll keep that momentum going all month, but I'm very happy for now. :D

Tracker Fanfic Masterlist

Since I've been fully sucked into the fanfic writing side of this fandom now, figured it was time to make a masterpost for these. (Mostly for my own benefit; I haven't decided which site to post these on yet so this will help me keep track of what ended up where lol.)

A New Art Technique

I'm excited about the new art technique I've come up with. I used it today to make the MFU fan art below.

For this technique, I made a rough photo manipulation, then traced it using a digital pen and tablet. Next, I deleted the manip, leaving only the tracings. Finally, I applied some virtual ink washes, also with the digital pen. (I added a couple of fictions not in the manip, too, notably Illya's right sleeve.)

This technique has two main advantages. First, it allows me to create finished images from photo manipulations without the endless color adjustment and attempts to match the noise and blur of different components. Besides being time consuming, those things tend to be hit-and-miss in their success. Second, it allows me to create something with a human touch despite my limited drawing skills. (I can draw a bit, but not well enough to create likenesses of the characters.)

It's also an interesting process. There is some artistry in choosing which lines to trace and how, what ink washes to use, etc. Not to mention the already creative process of making the kind of many-layer manips I have often produced.

I'm looking forward to exploring the applications of this technique.

Mission 116 Update for October 2025 (Month 18)

Although there has been and still is a LOT going on, not so much of it is measurable via this list.

25. Follow an elimination diet for 60 to 90 days
So far this has been a bit of a fail, mostly due to stress and health issues. And weather. I am such a comfort food eater when the weather gets colder. This does not mean I have given up on this goal, merely that it has been delayed.

28. Weight monitoring
I haven’t weighed myself lately but think it unlikely that I am continuing to lose weight.

29. BMI monitoring
Again, since I’ve not weighed myself for a while I can’t calculate BMI either.

53. Fix exterior spotlights
The front corner one remains incomplete. The old fixture is gone, I have purchased the new one and new bulbs, but getting the handyman to show up and do this five minute chore seems really difficult.

79. Declutter basement
Handyman Steve came by and took another truckload of discards to the dump and I am delighted to have it all gone. A few more things do remain, aside from the things I will leave for the new owners, but the basement is impressively empty these days.

96. Prepare a list of necessary selling/moving tasks and a schedule for them
At this point the list for selling the house is done and I have a five week spreadsheet schedule prepared for moving! There may be some issues that turn up post-inspection – the expectation is that my realtor will be able to negotiate any of those as price adjustments rather than my actually having to do the repairs.

99. Dispose of unwanted items
Not as big a decluttering month as September was, but very satisfying. I was so happy to get rid of a lot of bottled products for cleaning, pet accidents and the like. It felt really good to get rid of various toxic type stuff properly and safely disposed of - even if I did have to drive 200 miles in the rain to do so!

101. Settle on date to list house
I did sign with a local realtor. Our plan was to spend a week making the last touches and then the house would officially go on the market today, November 1st. Well, word got around quickly and after four showings last Friday, I received a purchase offer a week ago today. The inspection was done on Thursday and I am still waiting on the results.

103. Reserve a POD for moving
The way things are working out, I will be able to stick with my December 2 date for the POD delivery.

104. Hire a crew to help me finish packing and load up the Pod
Hired a crew to do the loading on December 3 and the kiddo is planning to fly in on either the 4th or 5th and hopefully we will be on the road by that weekend. The buyers have generously offered to let me stay in the house until mid-month as their moving date is flexible, but I don’t want to overstay that generosity.

107. Prepare a folder of needed info for new owners
I have a drawer full of manuals, instructions and various miscellaneous material that I hope the buyers will find helpful.

Now I am beginning to wonder just what November and December’s lists will look like!

Fic Meme

Snagged from [personal profile] svgurl

Rules: How many letters of the alphabet have you used for starting a fic title? One fic per line, ‘A’ and 'The’ do not count for 'a’ and ’t’. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count.

A — Are We Saying Hello Or Goodbye? (Eureka, Zane/Jo)
B — Be Careful What You Bottle Up (Hitman's Bodyguard, Kincaid & Bryce)
C — Coming Home To You (KPDH, Rumi/Jinu)
D — Damage Control (The Finder, Leo & Walter)
E — Every Robin Must Learn To Fly (Batfamily, Dick & Damian)
F — Feline Acquisition 101 (Community, Jeff Winger)
G — Got To Have Faith (DC Comics, Clark/Lois)
H — Hyperfocus (Psych, Shawn Spencer)
I — In Hindsight (Psych, Shawn & Gus)
J —
K — Kissing The Sunrise (Superman & Lois, Clark/Lois)
L — Let's Love Like There's No Goodbyes (DC Comics, Clark/Lois)
M — A Man Called PSYCH (Psych, Shawn & Carlton)
N — No One Left Behind (6 Underground, One & Team)
O — The Other Side Of The Apocalypse (Teen Wolf, Scott/Allison/Isaac)
P — Power (Farscape, John Crichton)
Q —
R — A Random Lottery Of Meaningless Tragedy (ER, John Carter)
S — Shelter In The Storm (Tracker, Colter/Reenie)
T — Twist The Knife Again (Tracker, Colter Shaw)
U — Under The Weather (Superman & Lois, Clark/Lois)
V — A Very Long Night (Stargate Atlantis, Lorne's Team)
W — What Would You Trade The Pain For? (Teen Wolf, Scott McCall)
X —
Y — Y2K Part Two (Wildstorm Comics)
Z —

22/26 Not bad! While putting together this list I realized that I have way too many fic titles starting with the letters T and W. And apparently I've reused a couple titles more than once - oops. The rules say to also mention total fic count but that'd be a lot of work since my fics are scattered across dozens of different sites, and I'm way too lazy to track them all down lol.

Here's the meme for anyone else who would like to try it:

Things I Like: Deteriorata

Poking around today, I found that quite a few more VCR-era Professionals vids are hosted on the Internet Archive now than last time I looked. One of them is Deteriorata by DJ Driscoll. This vid is set to a musical parody of the poem Desiderata. That's the one Doyle displays in his flat in the episode Discovered in a Graveyard. This vid is funny and has a great interplay between the music and the clips.
