This story is one that, for me, sort of set the bar for angst and h/c.  Perhaps it was because I read it early on and the writer is so unashamedly setting us up to flex all of our empathy muscles. No matter why I liked it, I present it to you for your enjoyment.  Please engage the drama, it will do you good.
