The Fortune Cookie Affair -Chapter 22

My apologies for being so late.  It's taken me a while to hit on my big idea.  This is a double drabble.
.....................................................

"Sylvia's dead?  And what did she mean, we'll never stop it in time?" Mark was asking as he looked at the body of their newly identified enemy.  Illya and Napoleon shared an expression that spoke to each of them as the befuddled Slate looked on.  He recognized that thing they did, that unspoken communication.

"You know?  But… ?"

"Sylvia isn't really Sylvia.  This…' Napoleon took hold of what appeared to be Sylvia's chin and pulled up a mask to reveal a woman whose face had formerly been unknown.

"This is Dr. Egret." Mark emitted a sound similar to a squeak.

"How did you know?"

Illya spoke up as Napoleon continued to pull off the mask.

"She missed something in her impersonation of the real Sylvia Barton, who is left handed.  Egret handed me the note with her right hand, something that I realized was wrong."

"But Dr. Egret? How did you jump to that conclusion?"

"How about we stop the thing she just said we can't, and I'll explain everything to you Mark."  Napoleon was already walking towards a policeman as he spoke over his shoulder to the junior agent.  April would have alerted headquarters by now.

Time to be heroes.

Oh well done! A stroke of genius to explain the deception of what was thought to be a loyal UNCLE employee. See, I told you I had faith in your abilities to pull it together, and I like how the chapter takes the reader back to when she handed the message to Illya.

I knew Sylvia was mixed up in this--but as Dr Egret??? An astonishing turn of events to be sure!
So many surprises in this story, what next?

Thank you for a very good chapter. I love that unspoken communication, and their catching the wrong-handedness, and the last line. Pulling off the mask was a fine moment, too.

Dr. Egret! Ha, intriguing! Although I wonder how Napoleon and Illya can be sure it's her and not a different impersonations expert, since they don't know her face. ;) And she's so sneaky, I wonder if she's really dead. Hmm.

Ah, Dr.Egret! You've helped make sense of this mixed up "stir-fry" of a tale. Very nice.

Ooh, such a good twist! And I really, really loved the last line, and the "unspoken communication".
