Car Quest - Short Affair 2/8

Prompts: grasp, blue
Words: 394
.......................

Hmmm...”  it was an involuntary sound made by a man deep in thought.

“What’s the problem?”  Napoleon looked up at the question.  He hadn’t heard anyone come into the room.

“Oh, what?  No, well... Hmmm.” Illya shook his head as a small smile formed on his lips.

“Yes, I believe we covered that, except you haven’t explained why you keep saying ‘hmmm’.”

Napoleon’s attention was now fully on his partner, a mild irritation rising to the surface.

“Very funny.  And hmmm isn’t a word, it’s a ...’ He noted the expression on his friend’s face.

“Well, it isn’t a word.  And my problem is this.”  Napoleon threw a blue book down onto his desk, a look of disgust on his face.

“What is this?”  Illya picked up the book and opened it to the cover page.

“Kelly Blue Book... hmmm.” Napoleon cut his eyes towards the blond, not sure whether that was a real response or a joke at his expense.

“Hmmm indeed.  I was considering buying a new car but mine won’t get enough of a down payment to make a dent.”  Illya was looking at the various images, car names and valuations based on age, features and other criteria for pricing used vehicles.

“What an interesting publication, I had no idea there was such a thing as this Blue Book.  Why do you need another car Napoleon?  The one you have is perfectly fine.  i really cannot grasp this need for new and improved when old is adequate and quite functional.”

What Napoleon didn’t need was a lecture from his Russian partner on the evils of consumerism.  He didn’t need a new car, he wanted one.  That’s what Illya couldn’t grasp.

“Look Illya, I have a certain ... umm... image, to maintain. It won’t do for me to driving around in a car that is older than ...”

“A year, two years?  Really, you must pace yourself Napoleon. And by the way, how’s the expense account going?  You just replaced two suits, did you not?”

“You know what Illya?”

“Probably not.”

Napoleon picked up the book that had caused his bad mood and dropped it into the trash can next to his desk.  He could finagle a new car from the UNCLE carpool and make do until... well, until he figured out a way to buy a new car.

He had an image to maintain.

Very nice way of showing the difference between their attitudes. Thanks for sharing.

I love the contrast in the way the two think about the issue of a new car.
