Drifting... - Short Affair 4/11

Prompts: drift, black
Word count: 344

………………………………..

Everything was black.

He thought perhaps he was inside, but then there would come that sense of being on top of a floating object.  He felt like he might drift away on the next little wave.

Someone was talking from a long distance…

"Napoleon… wake up Napoleon."  The sleeping agent woke with a start at the sound of his partner's voice.

"What? I… wow, I guess I really needed the sleep.  How long have I been napping?" Napoleon thought it was the middle of the day, but he hoped Illya wouldn't be too hard on him.  The last mission had taken a toll on both of them.

"Five hours is not a nap my friend.  You have gotten for yourself what amounts to nearly a night's sleep."  There was not an ounce of reproach in his comment, the Russian understood only too well what weariness felt like.  Napoleon had dragged himself back to New York after the affair in Rio with little or no sleep over the previous three days.  Illya's own adventures had netted him a stay in a THRUSH enclave, from which Solo had rescued him before they were able to fly back to the U.S., virtually unharmed.

"I know you spent those days looking for me, for which I am very grateful.  I just do not understand how you avoided sleeping on the flight home.' Napoleon smiled as he recalled the pretty stewardess whose attention he had gained, and the reason for his inability to sleep during that flight.

"Oh, yes… well, she was very pretty." Illya had learned long ago to let his friend indulge in the dalliances he enjoyed so much.  As for himself, he knew the value of sleeping over the ocean.

"Now that you mention it, I am a little  hungry.  What do you think about some Steak Pizzaiola from Luigi's, my treat? I imagine you had to spin some sort of tale about why I missed our meeting with Mr. Waverly."

Illya's reply was a smile that could not be mistaken for anything other than yes.

Wow Napoleon got away with missing Waverly's meeting. That must have been some excuse! Good one!

There are times when sleep is all your body will allow you to do. Thank you for such an enjoyable tale.
