I have to say again, this was absolutely brilliant cuz. Learning and speaking another language made me very aware of the differences in how English is not only spoken the U.S. and the U.K. but in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Some of the differences can be subtle and other times glaringly different, as you pointed out so well in this story.

It amazes me how different the same language can be sometimes.

It can also be amazingly different from region to region, and different parts of both our countries. I found that out when learning to speak Irish. Dialectic differences, idioms etc.

Yep, there was only a slight difference in the words but it was enough to stop them.

This spoke to the grammar nerd in me. My classes on the history of English were some of the most fascinating I had in college.

The problem with being an, oft-invaded, small island, we have absorbed every language which came along and created the confusion we have now.

I once read that 'English doesn't borrow from other languages.
English follows other languages down dark alleys, knocks them over, and rummages through their pockets for loose grammar.'
