Windows
Now that they had a minute to catch their breath after evading the THRUSH agents chasing them, Illya settled down with his back against the wall and slowly opened the wooden case. Curious to get a look at what they been getting shot at over himself, Napoleon eased down by his partner's side, gun still out and at the ready.
The gold of the icon gleamed in even the dim light of the room and Napoleon breathed out an appreciative noise.
"It's impressive."
Illya took a long look at it - longer than Napoleon would have expected from his friend who called himself an atheist. The silence stretched a little longer before Illya finally broke it, still looking at the icon.
"My Babushka told me that icons were windows through which we could catch a glimpse of heaven."
Another few minutes passed, then Illya gently closed the case again. Not for the first time, Napoleon wondered if deep down Illya believed in his grandmother's faith more than the party line of his country's current rulers. His thoughts were broken from that line of thought when Illya rose and took a glance outside.
"I believe we have lost them, Napoleon. Come. If we hurry, we can get this back to the church before Christmas."
"DId you take a hit to the head, partner? It's January fifth."
Tucking the wooden case firmly under his arm, Illya chuckled.
"The church this came from is an orthodox one, my friend. Christmas will be celebrated there on January seventh."
"Well then, let's give a hand to a little Christmas cheer. I'd have to imagine that having it back will make the celebrations there more meaningful."
"True. Christmas is definately an occassion when a window to heaven is most appreciated."
