Drabble: You Really Eat That?

Napoleon let himself into Illya's apartment.  He smelled coffee and something ... unique.  In the kitchen he discovered several crumpets smeared with a brown paste.  As he got closer, the coffee aroma was rudely overcome by notes of flowers, chicken, leather, and "Mr. Waverly?"

"What about Mr. Waverly?" Illya asked, joining him.

"Ah, this stuff smells like the Old Man."

Illya chuckled.  "I suppose it does.  Help yourself."

"What is it?"

"Marmite.  It's concentrated brewer's yeast."

Napoleon took a bite and immediately spit it out in the sink.  "You actually eat this stuff?"

"Of course!  It's delicious."

"I'd rather eat termites."

Inspired by a discussion and sampling of Marmite on a local morning talk show.

I'm with Napoleon on this. In the Love it / Hate it debate, I'm very firmly in the Hate it camp.

I don't mind Marmite...I have a small jar in my kitchen cabinet. It is a love/hate relationship. I actually prefer Vegemite but I can't get it around here. lol.

Cute story and relatable to those of us who've eaten Marmite. lol!

I can definitely understand why. There's a comedy bit by Billy Connolly involving him falling asleep in bed eating Marmite, hopefully it's on you Tube. "D

He should be glad it wasn't vegemite. It should be spread thinly, on plenty of cheese and bread. But not crumpets! That's a good idea about Waverly. And Napoleon's last line goes down much better than the marmite did.

I'm in the Love It camp. It's nicer on buttered crackers - I wouldn't want to eat it on crumpets. It's supposed to be good for cramp but I can't say it's ever done much for me in that respect.

I bought some in GB once and didn't know what to do with it; eventually, I used it as a sort of miso, to make soup.
