If you're here...

... Chances are you aren't doing any Father's Day activities, or have taken a break; perhaps you haven't even started the day yet.  I know for me it's always a little melancholic to encounter Mother's Day and Father's Day; both of my parents are gone, so the day seems a bit empty.

I'll be heading to a family thing after church, since there are a few fathers in the crowd and my cousin wants to honor them.  She and her sister lost their father last year, so I imagine they'll be a bit weepy when no one is looking.

... But since we're here, the topic is going to turn to UNCLE, which is not exactly the same as talking about one's father, but men are definitely our focus.

Napoleon and Illya... are they father material?  I know there are stories out there that attest to their excellent skills as a parent, the AU version of our guys.  Do you think that's possible, to be both super spy and super dad?

I don't know.  I think it might be a stretch, but then again, people have hidden capabilities that manifest when the situation demands it.  What sort of fathers do you think they might be?

If you have time and are interested in the topic, feel free to comment, or perhaps recommend a story that features one or both of them as a new or experienced father.

I suppose we could title this topic The Dads from UNCLE.

I don't see how either could be a dad and an agent (same with April as a mom and an agent). Then again, I don't see how doctors or firefighters can be parents - I think they'd be terribly unhappy every time they had to leave their kid. And an agent? When they have to leave unexpectedly, they could be gone weeks. Months. Forever.

I'm probably kidding myself. Plenty of people parent and have jobs that take them away a lot. I just don't think it's ideal and I think a secret agent parent would need to retired because (A) You need to be there for your kid and (B) HOSTAGE!

As you know, I'm the author of the "Sugar & Spies" series, so yes, I think they would make awesome parents. Illya might be a bit standoffish, but he would love and protect his children with unparalleled fierceness. Napoleon would be extremely affectionate and would probably spoil the children rotten, especially if he had daughters. Both would need input from the mothers; one to be more involved and the other to slow down on the gift-giving.

I know there are some great AU fics out there with the duo being dads. But, if we were to be honest I can't possibly imagine that either NS or IK would be without PTSD. As a child of a Marine who served in WWII and Korea I know how hard that can be for the parent and the child. The AU fics are great and I'd love to think that they would be great parents, but realistically I know that it just wouldn't work.

I have a few AU stories of Illya as a father set when he’s over 40 and doing administrative rather than field work. I agree with Alynwa about his being more reserved in his expression of affection but still fiercely loving. In The Four Steps he was very reserved and firm with Miki yet brought him bubblegum in the end. I tend to write him like that as a parent: not emotionally effusive but his kids know he’d do anything for them.

So far I’ve only referenced Napoleon as a doting uncle. I have some ideas for AU stuff with him as a parent, but they are as yet unwritten.

I, like many writers, can't see either of them as fathers, but, some time ago, I wrote a 4-part series https://archiveofourown.org/series/955545 (https://archiveofourown.org/series/955545), in which Thrush in the person of Dr Dabree wanted to use them both for procreative purposes - to establish a master race.
