Wednesday drabble

Sliding in just before Wednesday ends with a Hurt/Comfort drabble. 10 points to anyone who can identify what Illya's reading.

He rides a pendulum between boredom and pain. He reads until his head aches and his vision goes and he sets the book on the bedside table until he picks it up again to distract from other aches, from ennui, from wishing that he were home and could listen to records.

He’s squinting at a blurring page when a hand descends towards him. The nails, usually manicured, are scuffed and torn, he notes with some satisfaction. The book is lifted gently away. A warm, smooth voice begins, “It was in the tombstone salesroom that I had my first vin-dit…”

"a pendulum between boredom and pain" - great description of how someone injured or sick feels.

I want to say the quote is from Vonnegut with a side bet on Huxley. Just remember something dystopian associated with it.
