Picfic 26th March - What's in a name?

Sorry folks, I'm not a writer and this has been nowhere near a beta, or any other Greek letter. But the name came to me and I wanted to do something with it. Oh, and I don't know how to add the pic into the fic either.

Please don't hit me, cringe, cringe.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

“I don’t like her.”

“You don’t even know her, April.”

“That doesn’t matter, there’s something false about her.”

“I agree with you, but there’s nothing I can put my finger on. Just a feeling in the back of my mind. What do you think of her, Mark?”

Mark put their drinks down on the table and glanced across the bar to where a young woman was flirting with Napoleon.

“Other than her lipstick being a bit too bright red for my liking, I can’t see anything wrong with her.”

“What he means, Illya, is that he can’t get that shade of lipstick out of his shirts without scrubbing them. What do you know about her?”

“Just her name and that she works in reception at that office Napoleon was checking last week. But it’s her name I don’t like and I don’t know why.”

“Very well, Darling, what this name that you don’t like?”

“Mavis Bromwich.”

Mark almost choked on his drink, “Mavis Bromwich, no wonder you don’t like her.”

“Darling, I know girls don’t usually get named Mavis these days, but there’s no need to laugh at her .”

“No, you don’t understand, I’m not laughing. I know why Illya is uneasy about the name. I had a Great Aunt Mavis. Whenever we had family parties she always insisted on singing, she said her parents must have know she would be a singer when they named her.”

“And what does her name have to do with singing?”

“Mavis is another word for a song thrush. And which football team do you support, Illya? After Dynamo Kiev, that is.”

“The U’s”

“Are they even in the league?” Mark laughed.

“No.” Illya admitted ruefully as April asked “The U’s?”

“Cambridge United”, Illya added “It was the U’s or City, and I had friends who supported the U’s.”

Mark continued, “So you won’t be familiar with First Division clubs?”

“No, we couldn’t afford that level of game.”

“My Granda used to take me to watch occasionally as a treat. So I’ve watched the Baggies a couple of times and know their other nickname.”

“Don’t drag it out so, Darling, tell us the rest of it.”

“West Bromwich Albion are known as the Throstles, because of the song thrush on their badge.”

“Darling, you’re telling us that That Woman vamping Napoleon is called Thrush Thrush…”

And Illya was already half way across the bar heading towards Napoleon and a woman called Thrush.

Gee for someone who doesn't write, this was very well done and extremely clever! You should try writing more often. "Thrush Thrush." Love it! Congrats!

Oh no a dreaded jinx? Have felt that way myself a number of times. Generally when I get excited and look forward to something, it falls apart. So now I remain neutral about most things until they actually happen, as a preventative measure of course. :D

Thanks for an excellent little fic. Mark's deductions were realistic and suspenseful; and I love a woman called Thrush.

Too, I like learning about a team which really did wear Thrush badges.

[identity profile] laurose8.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. It's much prettier than Thrush's badge. But I do wonder if there were one or two remarks when The Series was airing.

This is absolutely wonderful! Don't let me hear you saying you're not a writer, because you just proved yourself to be a very good one. More, please.

[identity profile] rachaeljurassic.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That was great!

I have Illya pegged as a Dynamo fan in my 'universe' too. And I know about the disappointment of lower division football, being a Huddersfield Town supporter!

Thanks for a laugh.

[identity profile] rachaeljurassic.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Was it because of the advert?

[identity profile] rosywonder.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
My colleague from school's son played for Huddersfield Town! A noble team.

[identity profile] rachaeljurassic.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's cool. I've probably seen his knees running around the pitch then.

And they were, at least, very noble in the 30's. :-)

Probably; he plays for Blackburn now - not sure that was the greatest of decisions, but he's young ...

[identity profile] rachaeljurassic.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean Jordan Rhodes? Or did somebody else leap ship to Blackburn? And from my perspective, a VERY bad decision - although we just survived the relegation battle so Blackburn's 1-0 victory over Hudds (goal scored by said Mr. Rhodes, thank you so much) isn't quite so painful now. I've sadly never seen him play though, I didn't get the chance last year.

[identity profile] rosywonder.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes that's the lad! At least his mum is very nice. He should have stayed with you lot IMO.

[identity profile] rachaeljurassic.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Blooming heck. That's cool.

G'night.

[identity profile] rosywonder.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So that is why the Baggies were so dire on Saturday!

He may secretly support Dynamo, but in my universe he is converted to Liverpool FC. Of course.

A great story, my favourite blend of the boys and football - what's not to love?!!

[identity profile] rosywonder.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
He must be a man of extremely good taste and discernment. Next season ....!

[identity profile] rachaeljurassic.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
A mixed day for me on Saturday - I have Sturridge and Lukaku in my fantasy squad!

Liverpool is my Premier League team really, going back to the 70's/80's dream teams.

[identity profile] rosywonder.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Sturridge has been a great signing and although I miss Louis and his sharp teeth, it has enabled Sturridge to blossom. Can't wait for next season!

This is the fun thing about writing MFU - you can marry off the lovely blond to a Liverpool supporter (and wouldn't he look lovely in his red bobble hat and scarf?)

[identity profile] rachaeljurassic.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a good friend who is a rabid Liverpool supporter. As he says; 'Louis may be a maniac, but he's OUR maniac'.

So, Illya singing 'You'll never walk alone' in the Cop - he'd be in his element - and all that nice red too, he'd feel at home...although, maybe that would make him a Man U supporter since he already knows the words to their songs.

Runs away, VERY quickly...

[identity profile] rosywonder.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I will not dignify that with a reply......!
I loved the comment about Louis though. He's certainly got the teeth for it.

[identity profile] rachaeljurassic.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it was hardly a surprise.

Really going to bed now, maybe by tomorrow you'll have forgiven me for the other comment. :-)

[identity profile] rosywonder.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. Sweet scouse dreams.

[identity profile] avrovulcan.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Great fic, very well done. I look forward to more from you. Please?

[identity profile] glennagirl.livejournal.com 2013-05-13 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That is very fun and decidedly MFU :D I'm so pleased that you wrote something for us here on Section VII. Carry on!

[identity profile] alynwa.livejournal.com 2013-05-14 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
This is really good! I hope to see more from you in future.

[identity profile] alynwa.livejournal.com 2013-05-15 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, for someone who "can't string words together," you did a fine job.

[identity profile] jkkitty.livejournal.com 2013-05-14 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thrush, Thrush so wonderful. This is a great Fic, hope to see a lot more from you
