Who Needs a Critic?

Here is an interesting article about the Girl from U.N.C.L.E. series, how critics responded.  I would have to say April and Mark have fared much better in fanfiction than they did in the actual series.

Maybe she didn't get coffee (actually that's debatable in the 1960s), but she didn't actually fight either. She made moue faces and let Mark do all the fighting and take the beatings.

I totally agree with the general negative critical reaction to the show and the character of April Dancer in particular.

I'm glad section7 is producing good fanfic about GfU. It's a very good concept basically, and the producers had to work very hard to mess it up as much as they did.

I think April gets a better showing in fanfic than the original GfU is because we don't have to maintain the conventions of a tv show, especially the need for the star to have the biggest screen time. That, I think, was their big problem. The star must have the biggest part (that's why Illya got captured and Napoleon rescues him) but they couldn't work out how to do that with April without letting her get hurt, or even potentially hurt.

By the way, has anyone used Randy (unfortunate choice of name in the UK) Kovacks in stories?
