It Was A Dark And Stormy Night, Part III - PicFic Tuesday 4/1/14

PART I
PART II

Previously...

“Excuse me, sir but is the door made of something that will tell us what we need to know?  Should we be analyzing its content?”  Illya would take that path, dissect it like a lab experiment.

Waverly sighed with exasperation.  This younger generation sometimes wore him down.

“You needn’t make something more out of this, Mr. Kuryakin.  It is a door, and there are the keys.  I believe if you will use one to open the other...”

Oh.  Napoleon reached for the keys as Illya looked on, waiting for it to turn...

~~~~~:
As Napoleon turned the key the men heard a rumble of thunder. The weather had turned quickly from a calm and sunny day, but the thunder was a herald of more to come.  A flash of lightening lit the castle even as far as the stairwell, causing all three of the UNCLE men to draw their weapons as though to do combat with the elements.
“Just a bit of temperamental Irish weather, gentlemen.  Nothing to be alarmed about.”  Waverly replaced his Special with a particularly gentle maneuver, the practice of decades allowing his movement a special sort of gracefulness.  Illya thought he heard something more than thunder and decided upon a course of action.
“Be that as it may, sir, I believe I shall investigate a little more; perhaps some of the staff have arrived.”  He waited for a nod of approval from his superior before heading back upstairs to the kitchen.  Mr. Waverly’s presence here was still a mystery, as was the room he had led them to.  If this was part of the mission then there was always the threat of THRUSH, or some other unsavory group.
Napoleon returned to the task of opening the door, and this time he turned the key completely, unlatching the lock with a click that signaled it was open.  He turned to Waverly, wondering if the older man might wish to enter first.  For security purposes, it would be reckless, perhaps, but with him here on site all decisions were ultimately his.
“Go ahead Mr. Solo.  I am quite content to let you be the first to lay eyes on the interior of this room.’ The bushy eyebrows rose up in amusement before he continued.  “I assure you I am allowing you the peace of mind you need in protecting me.  I assure you there is nothing sinister here.”  Napoleon was at a loss to make sense of it all.  He wondered what Illya had gotten into by now, but with an intake of breath he entered the room.
Illya followed a trail of sounds, none of them threatening but sounds nonetheless.  Having gone through the kitchen, he came into the large hall just in time to see two young women seated on the damask sofa.  Each of them had long blonde hair and wore identical dresses made of dark blue velvet.  Upon closer examination, which Illya accomplished from across the room, he realized they were twins.  As one they turned to look at him while he was scrutinizing the scene.
“Oh, hello.  We’ve been expecting you, please come and sit with us.”  Illya was dumbfounded, but then that was often the case in his line of work.  Perhaps they were a trap of some sort...
“I didn’t realize anyone was up here.  Have you been here long?”  Illya was trying to find a way to ferret out some information, and wondered how Napoleon was doing with the mystery room and Mr. Waverly.
The girls looked at each other and giggled.  They were young, maybe sixteen or seventeen.  It seemed he was always getting saddled with teenagers while Napoleon courted beautiful women of an appropriate age.
“Oh, we came with our uncle.  He mentioned that two of his men would be here as well.”  More giggling only served to further confuse the Russian.  Was their uncle the same as his UNCLE?
Downstairs the head of UNCLE Northwest was enjoying watching his number one as he mused and mumbled over the circumstances.  Waverly had been right to get these two away from New York and into the relative wilds of Ireland.  They had no idea about the place he came to when the rigors of UNCLE demanded some respite from it all.
“Are you beginning to understand this little puzzle Mr. Solo?”  Napoleon was taken aback at the term puzzle.  What exactly had Waverly concocted here for them?
“Sir, I admit that, so far, I haven’t a clue.  This room appears to be a wine cellar, although I’m not sure I want to commit to anything at this point.”  Waverly smiled, so like Solo to want clarification.
“This is my wine cellar, Mr. Solo, and this is my castle.  I had rather supposed you might figure that out.  Never mind, ahhh... Mr. Kuryakin will have met my nieces by now, grand  nieces actually.  Their grandmother is my sister Eugenie, but then you don’t care about that.”  Napoleon was speechless.  Who was this man and what did they do with Mr. Waverly?
Find out next week...
What an excellent surprise. I certainly hope you mean early next week - first thing Moday morning?
I do like your Waverly, with his This younger generation sometimes wore him down, and think this could easily happen in canon.
Nice beginning, too, with Illya willing to analyse the door.
Oh you are creating and excellent head-scratcher here! Love Waverly's mischievous involvement, or it there other motivation behind his appearance at 'his' castle. And what's with the grand-nieces? Love Illya's conclusion..."It seemed he was always getting saddled with teenagers while Napoleon courted beautiful women of an appropriate age"
Glad you made it in time for the PicFic!.
