About Protean

Anyone with protean tendencies will love Halloween because of the opportunity to turn into any kind of character they can imagine. But the tradition of dressing up in costume for Halloween has roots going back to the 16th century. In Celtic tradition people would use costumes to hide from or frighten spirits. The practice has evolved over the years into the celebration of clever costumes and candy that it is today.

Did you Know?

Don’t get this confused with the similarly spelled protein. Protean comes from the Greek god Proteus, who had the ability to change shapes and tell the future. What a pair of talents — foresee something you don’t like? Just change shapes and get out of there.

Everyone knew that Illya Kuryakin had an uncanny, protean ability to assume different disguises and personas at the drop of a hat. Even his partner had the ability to recognize him once he'd morphed into yet another character.

thank you! Actually the second sentence had a typo, it was supposed to read "Even his partner had the inability..."

I didn't notice the typo, and read it as meant.

Napoleon Solo was confident in his abilities. He was able to charm and begule people, the fairer sex in particular, to do his bidding. He used his "talent" for UNCLE to accomplish his assignments. He had to admit that he used his talent to for his own benefit as well. He was seldom without company. Napoleon however was in awe of his partners protean ability to morph into someone else, to become another person. Napoleon knew that no matter how he dressed, acted, or behaved he was always Napoleon Solo.

That is a good contrast; and well written too, of course.
