I have to admit I am very excited about the possibility of Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo. I am crossing all my fingers (and toes) that possibility becomes reality.
I don't know either of the actors too well, so I'm fairly optimistic about their casting. They could be a pleasant surprise, and I'll be able to judge them on how well they play either guy instead of, "Hey, that's Tom Cruise in a tuxedo" or "Hey, that's Ryan Reynolds in a tuxedo."
I'm most interested in seeing how they deal with the timeswitch. I know the Mission: Impossible movies just flipped stuff over into the present day, but part of the premise of MFU is so early 60's that it's hard to imagine it working the same way in 2013. But doing a period piece might also be a turn-off for audiences and be seen as unnecessary. Like, the plot doesn't even matter, I just wanna know if they're getting the costume and set designers from The Mad Men Show or what.
I have to say, my opinion all depends on what kind of slant they give it. I mean, if it comes off as a serious attempt to tell a story within the existing genre, I'll probably love it, even if others say it sucks. But if they change the basic format, a la the Green Hornet movie (may Seth Rogen *burn* for that one!) then I won't touch it with a ten foot pole. I do think the suggested actors *look* pretty good; I don't know much about their styles. I just hope they try to stay true to at least the *spirit* of Uncle.
I think for me that the decision to go see it or not is based more on how it is handled rather than who is playing the roles. I've been surprised by actors before regarding what they can and cannot do with their skills.
A poorly written script, on the other hand, is harder to overcome.
Well, I can imagine I might get pretty excited to see a serious remake - but just a whiff of "Starsky & Hutch" awfulness and I'll scream - so I guess it really all will start with the script and director.
