There was an excellent op-Ed piece in the New York Times yesterday called, Forgetting Why We Remember. The real roots of Memorial Day are in an old racetrack in South Carolina and was started by some former slaves to honor a couple hundred Union soldiers who died under lousy living conditions. I wish I could post the link, but I'm having a wee bit of trouble. Google the article- I was amazed!
