I mentioned using a diary or journal as a prompt for some short entries, a way perhaps to get the writing juices going.  Here's my first entry, and it's April.

 Dear Diary,

It was a rough week in BabaloonieLand.  Of course, that’s not a real name because that would be against the rules. Right, like we follow rules here at my uncle’s house.

Poor Mark, he got conked on the head with a two by four.  I managed to get the guy who did it, but I broke two nails in the process.  Now I need to make an appointment for a manicure, and that means making them all even because of the two that are broken. Darn it!

I got to spend the morning with blondie, the one whose name I dare not speak.  That’s a good line, someone ought to use it in a book or a movie.

Anyway, I’m officially smitten and a little afraid that someone will spot the way I ogle him.  I need to not do that, it’s very unlike a spy.  Oh, I mean a very observant and self-controlled woman.

That’s not really what I mean, but I do feel a little like a schoolgirl in love with her teacher.

Oh, wait, I’m not in love.  I just think he’s cute… you know, in a manly way.  He doesn’t like to be called cute, which makes me want to call him that even more.

Ha! Anyway, at least I’m no longer in Babaloonie Land.

There is an overwhelming malaise regarding writing new stories for MFU. I know it's been a hard season for so many people, and by season I actually mean the last two years, plus or minus a few months.
Section VII has had a ten year anniversary this past February, and I've been writing fan fiction for twelve years. I would love to think that I'll write another story and yet it seems that Real Life has usurped my desire or motivation for it.
Anyone have the same issues?
Is there anything we can do to revitalize the writing bug? I know Muse gets a lot of credit but, it is really about that? Is there a way to make writing new fiction the therapy we all need to overcome some of our inability to put words to paper, so to speak?
Ideas are welcome, and perhaps we might interject some real life into the fiction. What about a Journal Challenge. What would Illya write about his own life if he were journaling? How much would Napoleon reveal about his state of mind if he wrote it down in a very secret diary?
If you don't have a feel for what the men might tell us, maybe April or Lisa Rogers, or Angelique? Now that's a diary that would make for interesting reading.
If you're up for the challenge, let us know. It can be stand alone or multi-chapter in style. I think it could be writer's therapy in a new way, the UNCLE way.

This is the 'just in case you missed it' entry.  We have several things going on, chllenges that are back from vacation and continuing features for your enjoyment.

There's a poll happening, and you can vote through next Wednesday.  Use the tag poll day.

Short Affair has a prompt up, and you can use the tag short_affair to find it and read stories.

PicFic Tuesday is back.  A photo prompt and your love of Solo and Kuryakin is all it takes for a winning story from you.  Try it, you'll like it.

Archives is a feature that revisits some of our fiction that's been done for challenges on Section VII.  We've filled in a lot of blank spaces on other sites, read it here to see where they began.

Tomorrow it's Writers and Readers Choice, so find that favorite story and get ready to give us a link so we can read it too!

Have a day, folks.  My car is covered in snow and ice, how about yours?

[identity profile] glennagirl.livejournal.com
I posted a poll yesterday, and it's still open if you haven't yet participated, or just need to review the answers. GO HERE
One of the questions asks if you will write something about your 'encounter' with your favorite spy.  Some of you are shy, but it reminded me of a story I wrote in response to a Fantasy challenge several years ago.  This one was for [livejournal.com profile] lindafishes8, a little romance for her on a wintry night.  You can find it with the link: An Unexpected Snow
If you have a favorite romance themed story, yours or someone else's, please post it today and share the LOVE.
If you'd like to request a romantic scene, just post in the comments with your prompt.

Prompt: Ritual

As they watched, the sun rose behind the Sun Stone, the ancient entrance to the Stone Circle, rays of sunlight channelled into the center of the monument.

A half-dozen white-robed figures appeared, walking from between the sarsen and bluestone archway. One of them was limping, presumably it was Davies.

Their ritual began and they all raised their hands in supplication as the light streamed onto them.  Chanting in the unfamiliar language, it was obvious they were calling on some unseen force or what they believed to be a Celtic god or goddess perhaps.

Again, my apologies for having to make you wait.

Chapter 14   (just to jog your memory)

Prompt: observatory

The man was alive, despite having been hit several times.  If the UNCLE agents had wanted to kill him, he would be dead.  Instead he’d been skillfully wounded in the arm, leg and one shot had grazed his temple. They needed him alive.

He moaned, returning to consciousness as Napoleon knelt beside him, grabbing him by the neck of his now not so white robe.

It was Nigel Davies, the head of the BBC film crew. They carried the injured man back to the tent and as April and Kit patched him up, Napoleon began his interrogation.

As Glennagirl put it, it's been tough finding the writing mojo, but I'm still plugging along...

The prompts: Neolithic, northeast

Mark, Napoleon, Illya and the others watched, albeit nervously, as April and Ellery headed towards the Neolithic site. Once arriving the two women surveyed the bodies that were still arranged as they had been.

There was no new corpse that they could see. Perhaps the lack of availability of live victims within the sphere of Stonehenge’s influence had indeed interrupted these grisly rituals.

As to whether that was a good thing remained to be seen.

Today is the first day to post in the What If? challenge.  This is the prompt:

What if...

Napoleon finds evidence that Illya is, in fact, spying for the USSR.  What will he do? What could possibly be the reason?

We also have Song Story, ABC 2020 Affair, Short Affair and A Little Drabble Do Ya.

I know this is a weird time to try and get the writing mojo going, I'm personally still on the road nearly every day with driving my cousin and his wife to dialysis (her), and now doctor visits for both of them.  My cousin has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, still waiting for the oncologist to say whether there will be surgery to remove the tumor.  I find it difficult to switch on the creative juices, and I'm sure many others are facing something in the wake of this pandemic and all of the peripheral issues surrounding it.

Let's carry on as best we can, pray for those most affected and, here in America, for peace and security to topple the chaos and violence we're seeing under the guise of progressive activity.  I can imagine Solo and Kuryakin on the job as they seek out information on what must certainly be fueled by THRUSH.

Be safe everyone, and if you can write then grab that moment and go for it.

Peace to you...

G.

Sorry this is a bit late. Thanks to tropical storm Isaias for chasing away my muse. As I've already promised, I will finish this story!

The prompts: megalith, magic

There was a sudden low hum that filled the air, and as it increased in volume everyone began to feel a tingling sensation on their skin.  It was as if they were covered with thousands of crawling ants.

“Run!” Napoleon shouted,”Get away from the stones!”

They took off, heading off in the distance to the cars used by Kit and the others. Parked far enough away; they seemed like a safe refuge from this bizarre situation...that was if the engines worked. At least the tingling finally stopped as they reached their destination.

A Little Drabble Do Ya!

It's all true, all of the above.  And, we have a mug to prove it.

What we need now are drabbles, and today's the day for that here on Section VII.

Just one hundred words, a mere few minutes of your time, and you'll have a drabble.

Seriously, what else are you going to do today?

Here we are in March. Time does indeed seem to be March-ing.

The prompts for stories due on 9th March can be found below the cut. For stories due today follow the link for the prompts.

https://section7mfu.livejournal.com/2750991.html

Don't forget, you can now chose to use one of the prompt words, or to use both in your story (not forgetting the colour element), remembering to state which combination of prompts you are using.

Remember, Section VII is a Gen site, but stories which are Het, Long-term Romance or AU can be posted in [livejournal.com profile] mfu_map_room.

You can post directly to Section VII or, if you wish, you can post your story elsewhere and provide a link. Please say where the link leads as a lot of people are unwilling to go to certain sites. Don't forget, Section VII and the Map Room are both available on Dreamwidth, for those of you who can figure it out (Just let us know if you posted there).

Have fun.

Lately, it seems that those of us who write MFU fanfic, except for [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58, are currently experiencing a writing lull. [livejournal.com profile] jantojones published a double drabble yesterday, but I think we can all agree that, for whatever reason, we're not being very productive.  I'm embarrassed to say that for the first time since I took over the Song Story Challenge, I was unable to publish anything for the January challenge.

Leap Year notwithstanding, February is short.  My suggestion is: Suspend all challenges for February to remove the pressure to produce.  Instead, how about we declare February a "free form" month and encourage ourselves to write whatever comes to our minds be they drabbles, one shots, gen, het & slash (in the appropriate venues, of course) of any length, even if it's only one sentence.

It's possible that someone might write something that inspires someone else to either continue in that vein or write something new.  If so, the original writer could be credited.   Also, maybe we could use this break to review the current challenges to determine if new challenges should be created and/or if any challenges should be put on hiatus or even discontinued.

What do you think, Cousins?
[identity profile] mrua7.livejournal.com
I nearly forgot about this one, sorry.

It was Sadie Hawkins Day and that meant a lot of hiding by the male members at headquarters.

Not that it was really a problem if they were caught, a marriage wouldn't be in the near future. It just meant a date of the woman's choosing. Trouble was if you were caught by more than one woman, it could result in some costly wining and dining.

Still the women who participated took it seriously enough to give chase. The corridors were crawling with women, who while doing their work, were on the hunt for UNCLE's most eligible men.

Those men who really didn't want to get caught went to some lenghts to avoid it.

This is a little late, but it grew into a much longer story than expected.... might be a good weekend read.

Summary: Napoleon and Illya are drawn into the Cold War when they must help a Soviet Scientist defect from Russia. Complications arise, as always putting Kuryakin in a tenuous situation as he must travel to East Berlin to complete the next part of the assignment.

The Prompt –

To the casual observer it could easily seem as though Napoleon Solo was quite a lackadaisical man. His relaxed posture, and apparent disinterest in what was being said, belied the sharp senses which were taking in everything.

Challenge: The Short Affair

Prompt Word 1 - Debate

-Prompt Word 2 Museum

-Prompt Colour Green

Author: mrua7
Title: “The disappearing Picasso”

Word Count: Approx. 600

Illya was in a debate with another museum patron over the style of Pablo Picasso.

He was not a favorite artist of the Russian, as Kuryakin preferred more traditional masters like Nikolay Koshelev or Vladimir Makovsky. He was especially fond of the landscapes of Ivan Aivazovsky.

Unfortunately the person with whom he spoke of those artists was unfamiliar with them. Given they were within the purview of the Communist party, they were rarely viewed by outsiders especially since the start of the Cold War.

Napoleon was admiring another abstract painting by Picasso when he noticed something strange; the green paint in “Reading at a Table” was beginning to run.

“Illya?” He called to his partner.”I think you need to look at this.

“Please Napoleon, must I? I do not care for Picasso.”

“Put your preferences aside and come look at this now.” Solo emphasized his request though gritted teeth and by pointing at the floor.

As soon as Illya saw the painting, he put on his eyeglasses and took a closer look at the artwork.

“There’s a problem here as this obviously a fraud.”

“No kidding, Sherlock,” Solo quipped.

Napoleon gestured to a nearby guard, pointing out the painting to him. He held up his UNCLE ID card, just to drive home his point.

The guard immediately spoke into a walkie-talkie and minutes later the museum director arrived with several more members of security.

The man had a look of panic in his eyes as he examined the painting as well as the other paintings in the wing. Thankfully the others seemed fine, though they’d have to be examined carefully to make sure they weren’t forgeries.

He turned to Solo, who introduced himself and Illya; he again presented his identification.

The director was obviously shaken as he spoke,“We have security cameras posted in each wing, so the last seventy-two hours will be available, that’s if this theft happened within that time frame. Would you and your partner care to join me and look at the tapes?”

“No sir. Unless we’ve been assigned to investigate this situation, we’ll have to decline. Though here is my card. You can contact my organization if in the event you’re unable to solve this theft.”

“I understand Mister Solo, Mister Kuryakin. Thank you for calling this situation to our attention.”

“I am sure anyone else eventually observing the painting would have seen the problem and reported it,”Illya said.” It would not take any special skills to see paint running on a canvas supposedly painted in 1934.”

Solo and Kuryakin said their goodbyes and left the museum.

“I have a feeling we’re going to be pulled in on this one,” Napoleon mumbled.

“Art theft is a complicated business, especially when insurance companies are involved,” Illya said. “I think the museum is perfectly capable of solving this mystery on its own, given they have security tapes.”

“I’d like to think that, but either way we’ll have to report this to Mister Waverly.”

“I was hoping you would not say that. Might you do it via communicator so we can stop for lunch. I am famished,” Illya’s stomach growled.

“All right, I could do with something to eat myself as I’m feeling a bit peckish. Better we get something now before the Old Man immediately sends us on a wild goose chase in search of the missing Picasso.”

“I agree…”Illya nodded.”Chinese or Italian?”

“Italian. I’m always hungry an hour after eating Chinese food.”

“Welcome to my world,”Kuryakin chuckled.
