Yeah, but those settings didn't help much with comments because those commenters are registered members of lj. I don't want to make the community open only to members for comments as that kind of defeats the purpose of fanfic being posted to the site.
If it is one (or two) particular entries that are being spammed and if that or those is/are old entries, you can lock the entry to further comments. Did that with the one entry of mine on section7mfu. Apparently whatever way they are finding the entries to comment upon is being targeted by some kind of word finder or such. So certain words, even though used in an entirely innocent context, will trigger the comment getting posted to the entry. Locking the entry to further comments leaves the existing comments in place, but doesn't allow any further ones to be added. So that defeats their search engine thing, since the targeted entry can't be commented on any longer.
