I think it's always worth remembering that it doesn't matter how intelligent you are, anybody can believe anything, otherwise tyrants would never exist. It's dangerous to think it only happens to OTHER people (quite often in OTHER countries). It's certainly true that the vast majority of people in the Soviet Union were genuinely devastated when Stalin died, even those people who had suffered there, because they never thought that Stalin was responsible.
