How many times do we sit and ask ourselves, What If... ? What if things had gone this way instead of that way? I imagine the men from UNCLE have had a few of those conversations, even if they do appear to be pragmatic about their jobs. Thinking along those lines, we're going to add the What If Challenge to our weekly calendar; it will be a scenario that each writer can interpret with how you think things should go.
Here's an excerpt from an article on what is a real system of analytical thinking:
So what is what-if analysis? Also defined as sensitivity analysis, what-if analysis is a brainstorming technique used to determine how projected performance is affected by changes in the assumptions that those projections are based upon. What if analysis is often used to compare different scenarios and their potential outcomes based on changing conditions.
In the above description, the What If is being applied to business solutions, but we have a world of opportunity to explore with this 'technique'; the whole saving the world scenario.
The Challenge prompt will post every Thursday, and you can post a story beginning that same day through to the following Thursday. Example: prompt posts on Thursday, January 5 and posting is open from the 5th through the 12th, when another prompt will post.
I hope this sounds intriguing to all of you, and that you'll have time to add this to your writing schedule. We won't be having the What's My Line? Challenge renewing at this time, but the others will remain on our calendar.
It's almost 2017, but we have our own Time Machine here on Section VII that lets us visit time and again the decade of the 60's and the world of UNCLE. It's the beginning of our fifth year here on Section VII, and it's been terrific. I hope we can all continue to enjoy this community with the same calibre of fiction and comraderie that has been our imprint on the fandom.
Happy New Year everyone.
