The Reading Room - Writer's Choice

First of all I'd like to say 'Thank You' to those who have been posting their stories for Writer's Choice. I'm enjoying reading again those stories that are personal favorites of the writers.
I'm the writer today, and my choice is The Starting Gate Affair.  I recently re-read this story (yes, I admit that I do that sometimes), and noticed some unanswered comments.  Sorry about that to those who didn't receive a reply, and thank you for commenting.  I hope you enjoy this one for perhaps a second time.  If it's your first time reading it then hold on to your cap, the race is about to begin.
