“At last spring has sprung!” Napoleon had his hands shoved in his pants pockets as he and his partner strolled through Central Park.

“You recall the last time we were here in the park, we dealt with that blasted weather control device?” *

“How could I forget?” Solo looked towards the darkening sky, wishing the sun would break through. He turned up his suit collar as a blast of wind hit him.“I take that back; it doesn’t feel like spring yet, does it?”

“I suppose not. Observe.” Kuryakin pointed to the sky as snowflakes began to drift down around them.

“Are you saying it is an immediate problem?”

“Not immediate, no.”

“So what are you telling me?”

“You must understand, Mr Waverly. There is only so much punishment the human body can take before it starts giving up. All section 2 agents have a habit of getting injured, but the worst are Solo and Kuryakin. The latter should have a medical team with him at all times.”

“Doctor, if you would like to suggest to my lead agents that they take more care, and not get injured so much, go ahead.”

“Er . . . Maybe I’ll see how things go, for now.”

...tick ....

'Which is worse?' he wondered. Being hung in the darkness unable to measure the passage of time, or being forcibly, audibly reminded of it?

...tick ...

He tried to ignore it. But the sound burrowed into his brain, compelling him to count seconds passing.

...ticktick ...

He ruminated on the clock's poor time keeping, its faintly metallic sound and the dampness of his shirt, before he realised it was the sound of his own blood, spilling across the metal floor of his cell.

His blood, counting the passage of time, until Death came for him.

Or Napoleon did.
