It's Monday again, so it must be time for the Short Affair.

You'll find the prompts for January 27th down below the cut. For stories due today, simply follow this link.

https://section7mfu.livejournal.com/2720717.html

Don't forget, you can now chose to use one of the prompt words, or to use both in your story (not forgetting the colour element), remembering to state which combination of prompts you are using.

Remember, Section VII is a Gen site, but stories which are Het, Long-term Romance or AU can be posted in [livejournal.com profile] mfu_map_room.

You can post directly to Section VII or, if you wish, you can post your story elsewhere and provide a link. Please say where the link leads as a lot of people are unwilling to go to certain sites. Don't forget, Section VII and the Map Room are both available on Dreamwidth, for those of you who can figure it out (Just let us know if you posted there).

Have fun.

MONDAY, JANUARY 20

Sabot

[sab-OH]Part of speech: noun

Origin: french, 16th century

  • A blocky wooden shoe
  • In weaponry, a disk that positions the projectile in the rifle barrel or cannon

Examples of Sabot in a sentence

  • A European peasant woman might have worn a handmade kerchief and clunky sabots on her feet.
  • The cannon replica was missing an important piece for positioning and firing, the sabot.

About Sabot

If shown a picture of a sabot, you might call it a clog. This clunky shoe, made out of a single block of wood, was the footwear of choice among 16th century European peasants. Then the military stole the word to describe a wooden piece of equipment used for stabilizing weapons that resembles the shoe.

Did you Know?

"Sabot" comes directly from the same word in French, meaning wooden shoe. But did you know there's a tie to the Italian word “ciabatta”? You’ll know this as a type of bread, but it was so named because of its resemblance to the wooden shoe.

His body remained still as his partner finished off the last of their attackers before hurtling over the fence, scrambling downwards to where Illya lay motionless.

Prompts: Rainbow, home, blue

Word Count: 576

“Do you see the rainbow?” Napoleon Solo figured his partner probably was seeing something like a rainbow, but since they were inside a laboratory in the bowels of a THRUSH enclave, he didn’t think it possible that Illya was truly seeing a rainbow.

“Yeah, I see it.  What’s your favorite color?” He humored the drugged out agent, there wasn’t any point to denying the rainbow.

“It is over my home, in Russia.” The accent was thicker.  It figured, less control meant less of that quasi-British accent he’d developed over the years.

“I’ve never been to your home Illya. Where is it, exactly?” There was a brief feeling of guilt at prying information out of his friend in the condition he was in, well… very brief, if he was honest.

“I…’ A sigh escaped as Illya’s hand reached out into the image in his mind.

Eto proshlo.”

Gone?  Napoleon knew that would be like catnip to the shrinks back at headquarters.

“I’m sorry Illya.  Say, tovarsch, do you think you can stand up and help me find a way out of this place?”  Napoleon needed for Illya to snap out of it, as best he could anyway.  Sometimes, being honest again, he thought they let themselves drift away and into the haze that drugs created.  For a few minutes they were free of the entire business of saving the world.

“Napoleon?” Illya’s voice was a whisper, perhaps in recognition of their situation.

“Yes Illya.”
