• Cheerful feeling with no worries.

Examples of Insouciance in a sentence

• I admire my partner’s insouciance toward traffic and other things that annoy me.
• On the last day of school the children ran out of the building, riding high with insouciance.

About Insouciance

You might prefer to focus on the breezy, worry-free cheerfulness of insouciance, but it can have a less sunny connotation as well. Someone might be accused of displaying insouciance with careless behavior if they just can’t be bothered.

Did you Know?

Tossing out a “no worries” with a wave would be the perfect demonstration of insouciance. It translates directly from French, with “in” meaning not and “souciant” meaning worrying. Just don’t get “Hakuna Matata” stuck in your head, and you’ll remain carefree.

Daily Prompt, 27th February 2020

‘Spying is a dangerous business,’ Illya commented.

Hanging by his fingertips, a thousand feet above what promised to be an extremely unfriendly, rock-strewn open grave, Napoleon was forced to agree. City suits had never been made for climbing mountains in. He had never been made for climbing mountains, although he didn’t mind a gentle stroll in the foothills.  His arms were almost straining out of their sockets with the weight of his entire body. His fingers felt about to deglove, but if they did, the pain he felt would be very short, before he hit those rocks far, far below.

‘Can I give you a hand?’ Illya asked, his head just visible over the edge of the icy ledge.

‘Thought you’d never ask,’ Napoleon managed to force through lungs constricted by his position.

His entire body was about to come apart at the seams, and Illya had the gall to just appear, like a miracle, like an avenging angel, and speak to him as if he’d caught up with him in the corridor carrying two cups of coffee and a bunch of sandwiches for lunch.
