It's great, isn't it! If the series were done today, I doubt whether enigmatic figures like Illya would remain enigmatic, or so interesting, for so long. He didn't belong to one writer, which also makes a difference. I know JK Rowling hates the idea that someone else has given her characters a back story - or any story - and you can't blame her. But Illya has no single parent (except perhaps the actor who created/embodied him), so we feel he belongs to us all.
