I can believe it. In his early films (they're British, I can call them that) he smokes a lot and you can see nicotine stains on his fingers - my dad was the same, which is why I recognise them. He's been lucky to avoid cancer - my dad stopped smoking in 1968 but got a (curable) throat cancer thirty years later.
