About Anodyne

While medicines and pharmaceuticals hog most of the spotlight for producing anodyne — or pain-relieving — effects, Tylenol and Advil aren't the only things that can bring physical relief. Anything that can soothe a situation or bring joy can be considered anodyne, like watching the sunset or, yes, watching cute cat videos on YouTube.

Did you Know?

Literally speaking, the Greek origins of anodyne mean "free from pain." Its more modern usage, about avoiding contention or discomfort before it even occurs, is thought to have French roots, as well.

Illya Kuryakin, though a gentleman, was far from anodyne when dealing with the likes of THRUSH. Sometimes Napoleon thought his partner really enjoyed inflicting pain upon their enemies, but then he'd tell himself 'Nah,not illya.' The Russian made no attempt to correct Solo, and in truth Illya knew he had a vicious side to himself.

Mr. Waverly was silent as he watched his two top agents from the door. Medical was busy tonight, a strike against a large THRUSH lab had been successful but not without casualties. Illya Kuryakin was unconscious, IVs and breathing tube in place. Napoleon as was customary between the partners was providing an anodyne presence, sitting by the bedside, holding his hand and talking to him.
