Abrogate

About Abrogate

Prohibition was spurred by the 18th Amendment, banning the sale and consumption of alcohol in the United States, and took effect in 1919. The unpopular law to abrogate drinking is considered to be a failure, as people still found ways to drink and criminals made massive amounts of money off bootlegging. In 1933 the 21st Amendment repealed the 18th, becoming the only amendment to abrogate another.

"Abrogate" is just one term used to imply ending something. Synonyms include "nullify," "negate," "annul" and "invalidate," but they all have different nuances of meaning. Use "abrogate" when there is an official or formal action being taken.

With Alexander Waverly out of commission for a few weeks due to surgery, Harry Beldon was left in charge of UNCLE Northwest. His first action in his new position was to abrogate many of the rules set in place by his predecessor, none of which sat well with Solo or Kuryakin.

Given Beldon's place of power was only temporary, Solo didn't hesitate in letting Harry know that his nonsense wouldn't be tolerated.

Beldon laughed. "What, no backup from Kuryakin? Why is that no surprise, he's a bit of a turncoat considering he did that to me after I took him under my wing."

"Is that what you call it Harry?"Illya said, having come up behind Beldon, taking him completely by surprise."I thought it was more common sense, something of which you are in short supply."

Mr. Waverly was well aware of the problems his new Russian agent was facing. He knew about the comments, threats, practical jokes, shunning as well as occasional physical incidents. He wondered if he should abrogate the situation himself or wait and see what would happen. If he took action himself he suspected Mr. Kuryakin's situation would continue the same or perhaps become worse. His co-workers thinking he was being coddled by Section One. If however his young Russian was able to handle this himself it would perhaps cause some to view him with respect.
