And Illya's defense in this case was indeed bold. Even with the weight of U.N.C.L.E. on his side (and after all, it was certainly possible Waverly might be concillatory in such circumstances and not press any case against the Soviets interrogating Solo), this was an extremely daring move for the Russian to make.
When the guys make a point to rescue one another even when Waverly might question any such move, the risk in the end is only personal: possible death or some bad mark on the career. But in this case the risk went well beyond that, into how U.N.C.L.E. itself might be treated by one government or another. And Illya knew that, but he was still willing to take that risk... for a friend.
