There hadn’t been any rain in the North East for several months, causing an unusually dry climate and the early fall of leaves from moisture starved trees.  Alexander Waverly nodded to his escort to stay in place as he took his seat next to a man of dissimilar size,  but similar rank in his own organization.

The two men were powerful players in an international game of cat and mouse.  Score one and lose one seemed to be how the game was played, but there was a sense of enduring victory on the side of right as far as Alexander was concerned.  He would not yield the field to this other man’s agenda.

Meeting like this, in a public place, had been arranged as a means of discussing the current affair in Florida.  It was one thing to stir up insurgents in a third world country that lacked leadership of any kind, but to try and detach a part of the United States... it bordered on lunacy that only the Hierarchy could imagine.  It was going too far, people would be hurt and the government would soon become involved if Solo and Kuryakin didn’t put a stop to it.  The other way of stopping it was happening now, in Central Park.

“Alexander, I am flattered beyond words that you have summoned me like this.  Forgive me, however, if I am unable to grasp the meaning of such a meeting.  You will, perhaps, enlighten me.”  Victor Marton´was not a man to be easily manipulated, but he did have a high regard for his adversary.  The history of the two men was something of a mystery to those around them, but that each of them had wished at one time to be allies rather than enemies was something that pulsed beneath the surface.

“Victor, you know very well what it is we are here to discuss.  This ridiculous situation in the Florida Keys, and the Lighthouse Secessionists Movement you have going on down there.  It is absurd and certain to become a battleground as soon as the United States government gets wind of it, if they haven’t already.  I’ve done my best to contain it, for the sake of the innocent people involved.”

Marton´smiled, something that indicated his amusement more than appreciation for the situation.

“Alexander, you know very well there are no true innocents, especially in this situation.  What THRUSH is offering the elite members of this group is an opportunity at self-government in a way they have only dreamed of.  I assure you, THRUSH is merely the instrument of their liberation.”

Waverly huffed, unwilling to let this opportunity pass.

“Victor, I will give you twenty-four hours to end this.  After that I cannot guarantee what actions might be taken against you and your ... your crew.”

Marton´ feigned indignation, but he couldn’t resist the final word.

“I suggest you ask your Mr. Solo if he’s heard from that disreputable partner of his... umm. M. Kuryakin?”

Alexander felt the sinking feeling of a commander whose troops are under fire.

"I suggest you ask your Mr. Solo if he’s heard from that disreputable partner of his... umm. M. Kuryakin?"

Victor is such an evil character. Glad to see him in your story. But what about Illya????? I hate being kept waiting but you do it soooo well'
