Title: Can’t keep a good man or Napoleon Solo down

Word count: Approximately 625

It was a rare thing for Napoleon Solo’s charms not to work on a woman but when it came to a certain girl named Sara from Communications; he was at a loss as to why his advances towards her failed yet again.

He supposed that Mr. Waverly having referred to her as ‘Agent Sweetie Pie,’ might have been a source of embarrassment to the girl as it surely had gotten back to her. People at headquarters liked to talk.

Solo enjoyed giving some of the ladies pet names and in Sara’s case, ‘sweetie pie’ seemed just right.  She was sweet and ripe for the picking, metaphorically speaking.

There was one time, just once when he’d gotten her into the closet in the map room, but after a harmless kiss, she retreated.

Not that she hadn’t responded to him before; he was sure his smile and flirtations seemed to pique her interest, but she resisted. At first he thought she was playing hard to get but then he realized something had scared her off, though he had no idea what it could have been.

Perhaps the embarrassment of the nickname getting out...well, Napoleon figured his chances of getting to know her on a more intimate level were just about zero after that.

It was when he happened into the map room and found her there that he figured he’d give it one last college try.

“Sara, I’d like to apologize about incident with the nick…”

“Napoleon,” she blushed a little, cutting him off. ”Please don’t worry about it; that really wasn’t a problem. I sort of found it cute that Mr. Waverly referred to me as ‘Agent Sweetie Pie,’ mmm, it was actually sort of a turn on.”

Did he detect a near purr in her voice? Solo hesitated. “You’re saying you find Mr. Waverly sexy?”

“Why of course. I just adore older men, though I know he’s married and I would never presume…”

“No, no, you wouldn’t would you,” he sighed. That was it, and Solo knew it. He’d lost out to not only an older man, but his boss. It was a case of unrequited...attraction. Still he had to try one more time.

“Does that mean you and me…?”

“You’re a little too young for my taste Napoleon, sorry. You can come back in about thirty or forty years, then you’d have a chance.”

“I will make note of that Sara, thanks.” He nodded to her in surrender.

Napoleon left the map room; his ego a bit deflated, and feeling as though he’d had the wind knocked out of his sails. He wasn’t accustomed to rejection.

“Hmmm,” his eyes lit up with a smile when Margo, a new secretary, walked past him and he did a quick about face.

“Napoleon?” He heard his partner’s voice calling to him. Illya had been walking in the opposite direction and made a course correction to catch up to Solo.

“Not now Illya,” he whispered out the side of his mouth.”I’m in pursuit.”

“Margo? I have bad news my friend. She is married.”

That stopped Napoleon dead in his tracks. “Two strike outs today, darn,” he snapped his fingers.

“You? I find that hard to believe, given your Casanova reputation.”

“Well, I’m not done in yet,” Napoleon snickered. He headed straight for the secretarial pool; toodling his fingers in farewell to his partner as the doors opened.

"Do not forget Napoleon...our assignment in Chacua, as you recall we have to take out THRUSH's Ultimate Computer?"

"Hey it's me, I haven't forgotten. I'll catch up with you," Solo called back before disappeariing through the door.

Mark Slate having witnessed it all, walked up beside Kuryakin who was standing with his arms crossed.

”He’s on the make isn’t he mate?”

“When is he not, really? I suppose one cannot keep a good man or Napoleon Solo down...” Illya shook his head.
