I chose Prompt 1, although I concentrated on the part highlighted in blue.

Prompt 1: Napoleon and Illya discover Thrush have a man in UNCLE (again), a “bona-fide, first-class, grade-A mess” which paralyzes the organization. The double-agent turns out to be Carla Drosten of Security and Personnel, recruited into UNCLE right out of high school. So the questions arise…When and why did Carla join Thrush? What is the fallout of her treachery within the agency? What happens to the trainees and agents that she cleared for duty?

What was it with Illya and crazy blondes?

Flames on a train

adria142 (1).jpg

Illya hadn’t returned to their compartment after the strange ending to the mission. He had agreed with Napoleon that they should exchange compartments with Eva, to relieve her distress over the death of her employer, and had then disappeared. Not prepared to lower his moral standards by attempting to seduce a nineteen-year-old virgin, Napoleon found himself alone. He had a pretty fair idea of where his partner was, however. Two doors along, bursting into flames with that crazy girl. He seemed to be taken with crazy blondes, or more probably they with him, though not invariably with this kind of success. There had been a moment, not long ago, when it looked likely that Tracey Alexander might have her wicked way with him – but no. Illya couldn’t offer enough money or status for more than a kiss. It seemed he was a bit luckier this time.

Great Episode challenge 22-28 December 2017 (Jingle Bells Affair, prompt 2)

Anything’s possible
It was through no particularly effective work on the part of his UNCLE bodyguards, that the Chairman escaped the continued attempts on his life. Rather it was through the concern aroused in him for a small sick boy, and the high moral tone of an attractive young woman. She appealed to his chivalrous nature, and though he thought she was too sweet and soft for an army officer, the assumption could only be that this was the American army style – soft, capitalist, Western – which would perfectly accommodate the new peaceful coexistence he wanted to promote.

The experience of dressing up as Santa Claus was an unexpected bonus. He decided it was an essentially Soviet activity, and demonstrated that perhaps communism had arrived in the West – the spreading of wealth in the form of gifts to children – and his flamboyant soul revelled in the colourful accoutrements of the role.

What he hadn’t taken into account was his aide, Maxim Radish’s reluctance to accept that there might be anything good about this most capitalist of countries.

Great episode challenge 24-30 November 2017 (The Pop Art Affair, 1)
(Who painted the “other” portrait, and where (and why) is Illya hiding it?)

Dostoevsky eyes
maze229 (2).jpg

With Mr Waverly successfully conned into buying that extraordinary artwork of Sylvia’s, she tried to persuade me to buy (unseen), for our office, a drawing she’d done of Illya. She said he didn’t want it because he “had a portrait” already. News to me. I’ve never seen a portrait of him – only official photos, and one or two of mine he’s appeared in. Anyway, if he hadn’t wanted it, it couldn’t have been very good, so I declined, valuing Illya’s friendship and the future of the partnership slightly higher than the pleasure of tormenting him.

Something had happened between them – presumably while they were chained together and out of sight – and it was fairly obvious what (and it wasn’t hiccups). Illya’s starting, let alone continuing, a relationship with a girl barely out of her teens and rather naïve, was baffling, considering his general preferences for women with a modicum of experience, if not intelligence. I wanted to know, too, why my partner had given that other girl, Heidi (who also seemed revoltingly taken with him) such an odd look when she identified him so immediately because of Sylvia’s description of his “Dostoevsky eyes.”

So, what was this Dostoevsky thing? Significant? Probably not, but as there was only the last mission to write up, and I didn’t feel like doing that, I thought I’d put in a little research.

Episode: The Gazebo in the Maze Affair (S1E27)

Prompt 2: Edith Partridge has fond memories of South America, particularly the “young men in their sparkling uniforms.” She thinks Illya “very sort-of physical looking in an unusual way” and gets a bit handsy with him in the dungeon. The questions…Did Edith have a yen for Illya? And for Napoleon? And for any handsome young man? What would happen if Illya and Napoleon encountered Edith again?

As promised, at long last, more Edith. :)

The picture goes to AO3.
