My only complete first meeting story is published in the most recent Kuryakin Files. But I'm toying with another possibility...
************
"Mister Solo, believe me when I say that I understand your distress." Alexander Waverly puffed once on his pipe and continued, "Your wife was by all reports a vibrant woman, and I wish nothing more than that she had been unharmed by circumstances. But you are neither able to change her fate nor alone in your grief."
Napoleon took a moment to parse the sentence, then looked up at the older gentleman, confused. "I am sorry sir, but Katya didn't have anyone. Not beyond school anyway. Her parents died last year."
"Her parents died in the war. You speak of her adoptive family."
"Well they were parents to her."
"True enough. But she was not the only one separated and subsequently adopted by a soldier's family. Did she ever speak to you of her brother?"
"He was the only part of her past she did speak of. Losing her twin... Oh why would a loving God take so much from her and finally her life? To leave nothing left of her..."
"Perhaps not nothing, Mr Solo." He passed a file to Napoleon, who automatically opened it and stared at the photograph of a face he almost knew. "Mr. Kuryakin is an operative with the Soviet intelligence services, and has been granted the opportunity to investigate the untimely deaths of a variety of Soviet expatriates. He has only just learned of the death of his sister." Napoleon's eyes rose just in time to be ensnared by the old man's gaze. "Should you accept and join our humble organization, I can promise to offer you as assistance in his investigations."
