“Now sit still Mr. Solo. This will only take a few minutes.”
“Easy for you to say,” the UNCLE agent grumbled.
It was painful, to say the least. He felt awful as he’d been injected with some sort of compound that partially paralyzed him, except for his autonomic functions and his ability to speak.
His eye were wide open, unblinking and his pupils had been dilated. His tear ducts were working fine, but his inability to blink circumvented them and they simply welled up and trickled down his cheeks.
The doctor moved the retina scanner closer, shining a blue light into Solo’s eyes, mapping each of them, and picking up up any little defect, any characteristic that could be used as a unique marker.
The machine hummed and as a bright light shone into Napoleon’s eyes one at a time; the pain became excruciating as dye was dripped into them. He fought against acknowledging it as best he could until he could stand it no more and let out a groan.
“Ah so you are human,” the doctor snickered. There was a click and the light was turned off.
“You can blink now Mr. Solo. Here,” she handed him a tissue. “So we have a complete map of your eyes now, and you don’t have glaucoma by the way. These scans will help prevent any impostors from getting into secure locations within headquarters once R&D has installed the new equipment to scan retinas. Everyone’s eyes are different, like fingerprints with no two exactly alike. Yours by the way have several...let’s say, freckles, in the choroid layer lying between the retina and the sclera. Quite distinctive, and perfect markers to identify you. Impossible to duplicate.”
Napoleon wiped the yellow dye from his eyes, blinking again and again until they felt better.
“On how many people have you performed the exam so far?”
“You are the first Mr. Solo. Are there any suggestions you might give to make the test go better?” She asked.
“A numbing agent perhaps before you inject the dye would be a good idea as it was rather painful.” Napoleon got up out of the exam chair. “And I think with that, then the paralyzing drug wouldn’t be necessary either.”
“I will make note of that, thank you. I know exactly what I can use for that. Now if you could send in Mr.Kuryakin please.”
“Of course Doctor but may I ask that when you dilate his pupils and inject the dye, to not to use anything for the pain.”
“But didn't you say it was quite painful? Why would you do that to Mister Kuryakin? Isn’t he your partner?”
Napoleon tried hiding his smile. “Let’s say that I have my reasons and leave it at that.”
“Mr. Solo?” The dark haired opthamologist wasn’t sure to what he was alluding.
“Doctor, as the number two agent in all of UNCLE, Mr. Kuryakin needs to be able to set an example for others. His enduring the discomfort during the test is a sort of badge of honor.”
“You know Mr. Solo they say that you’re one of the best liars around,” she smiled. “So I think not.”
“Now would dinner and drinks help me convince you otherwise?
“That’ll work,” she ran her neatly manicured red finger nail along his chin.
He smiled as he headed to the door.” Eight o’clock then Doctor?”
“Oh please call me Giselle?”
“What a beautiful name. I look forward to getting to know you much better... Giselle.”
Napoleon blew her a kiss before he stepped out into the waiting room; feeling rather pleased with himself.
“Okay Illya your next.”
“How was it?”
“Piece of cake and it’ll be over in the blink of an eye.”
Kuryakin cast a suspicious look. “Why do I have a feeling you are not telling me the truth?”
“Moi, would I lie to you?”
“In a heartbeat,” Illya snickered.
“Tovarisch, you’re always too suspicious.”
“It is a hazard of the job,” Illya opened the doctor’s door.
“But I’m your partner...your friend.”
“I know. That is what worries me sometimes."
