Things weren’t exactly going to plan today. Napoleon was left high and dry having been stood up by his date. Here he was sitting alone in the Purple Unicorn amidst a crowd of couples all enjoying themselves, drinking and dancing.
He’d never found himself in this sort of situation as he was accustomed to women practically clamoring at his feet to go out with him.
The woman with whom he’d made the date was one he’s met at Macy’s. He was shopping for some new ties and she was behind the counter. Her name was Sharon Mansfield; a voluptuous bleach blonde, with a 36-24-36 hourglass figure if he ever saw one. She had inviting lips and a pair of big...blue-grey eyes.
She had him at, “May I help you?”
Sharon made some very nice selections for him, including a very subtle dark grey and black striped number Napoleon decided to buy for his partner. It would be a bit of a change from Illya’s usual narrow black tie, though not enough to probably keep the Russian from wearing it.
Kuryakin was very specific in what he liked and didn’t like in clothing; his tastes leaned toward the simple.
Solo looked up after nursing his Manhattan, he’d ordered it instead of his usual scotch on the rocks. Who did he spot across the room but his partner on the dance floor with none other than Sharon Mansfield.
“What the hell? He hadn’t told Illya about her, so how did this happen?”
The little green-eyed monster was sitting on Solo’s shoulder as he never really liked his partner getting the girl. Not that he ever did anything about it, but it just bugged him.
This time he decided to find out what was going on. He got up, walked out to the dance floor and tapped Illya on the shoulder.
“Excuse me but may I cut in, partner?”
“Napoleon? What are you doing here? I thought you had a date.”
Solo looked down, seeing the Russian was wearing the very tie he’d selected with Sharon and planned to give his partner as an impromptu gift.
“I did, with Sharon here.”
The girl’s face turned beet red.
“Oh I’m so sorry Napoleon; I must have gotten mixed up. I thought we were going out tomorrow night. Gee you two know each other? I met Illya at work this afternoon. He came in to buy a new tie and I selected this one for him, the same one you….ohhh. “ She suddenly realized another faux pas she’d committed, though not intentionally.
“I do apologize. Can you forgive me Napoleon?” She batted her long eyelashes at him; turning on the same flirtatiousness she had when they first met.
“Hey accidents happen.” What was he going to do, get mad? He evicted that green eyed monster from his shoulder with an imaginary flick of his finger.
“How about the three of us enjoy the evening together? We can have some dinner after a few more dances and drinks here. I’ll treat.”
“That is up to the young lady I think?” Illya said.
He knew from experience that Sharon would most likely would go off with Napoleon at the end of the evening once he turned on the Solo charm. She’d go to bed with his partner, as Napoleon had a way of seducing women that he just couldn’t comprehend. The man just never turned it off.
It was no big deal,”Illya thought. “He liked Sharon but wasn’t ready to bed her. He preferred to get to know a woman for a time before he did that. Besides he’d get a free dinner out of it tonight as he hadn’t planned to take Sharon anywhere after they were done with their date here at the club.
“Actually I’d like to go home if you two don’t mind?”Sharon said.” I’m feeling awfully embarrassed about this mix up and I wouldn’t want to come between you two. So if one of you could get me a cab; I think I’ll call it a night.”
That came as a surprise to both men, though they showed no reaction to it. Solo ordered her the cab; Illya escorted her outside and waited until she got into it and drove off.
There was no goodnight kiss, nor did he expect one.
Illya returned, silently seating himself at the table beside his partner.
“Well this was a disappointment wasn’t it tovarisch?”
“Only if you have changed your mind about dinner. I am getting hungry.”
“When aren’t you? Okay, dinner it is but how about we find a diner so you can go a little easy on my wallet.”
“Oh I am only worthy of a good meal at a nice restaurant when Miss Sharon was included?”
Napoleon cringed. “Sorry, that’s now how I meant it to come out. Fine where would you like to go?”
“Russian Tea Room?”
“Okay, Russian Tea Room it is.” Napoleon stood, wondering how he always managed to get himself into these situations...no wait. This was of his own doing. He did, after all, offer to buy dinner.
“What the hell, “he mumbled to himself. This was his partner and best friend. The man had saved his life on too many occasions, so it was worth it buying him dinner no matter what the reason.
“Napoleon?”
“Yes Illya?”
“You do not have to pay for my dinner. Still if you would like to accompany me to the Tea Room it would be my pleasure to buy you dinner for once, to make up for the mix up with Miss Sharon.
“Umm, I’m, ugh... thanks tovarisch. I accept.” Napoleon chuckled thinking this evening was turning out better than he thought it would.
“By the way, nice tie…”
