The Rendezvous - Picfic for 01/26

The note just said:
'The Mall, 19:00'
It was typed on standard UNCLE memo paper. Illya flipped it over, but there was nothing else written on it.
"What have you there, my friend?" Napoleon asked, seeing the puzzled look on his partner's face.
"I do not know, exactly."
Kuryakin handed the cryptic message over.
"Where did it come from?" Solo queried as he, too, examined the note.
"It was left here on my desk."
"Hmmm, so it must be from within HQ, but it's not an assignment, well, at least I haven't been told of any assignment taking place in Central Park tonight." Napoleon raised an eyebrow, a twinkle lighting his eye. "How do you know the note is meant for you? It could be for me, Suzie in Communications has been quite - hmm, well, you know!"
Illya sighed, rolling his eyes, why did his friend always seem to turn everything into a romantic liaison?
"Maybe because it came in an envelope with my name on," the Russian answered with his own raised eyebrow.
"I suppose the only way to find out who it's from is to follow the instructions. Do you want backup?"
"Nyet, I do not think it is anything malicious. Whoever took the message must know who it is from, otherwise I think something would have been done about it."
"Yes, you're probably right. You'd better wrap up warm, I think it's still snowing out there."
"Ahh, that is not real snow, if you want to experience real snow I will take you to Siberia one day," Illya grinned.
Napoleon shivered in response, "No, I'll stick to New York snow, thank you."
Kuryakin, dressed in his overcoat, departed the office to make his way to Central park and the mysterious rendezvous.
Ten minutes after the Russian left, April and Mark walked into the office.
"Did Illya find his message?" Dancer asked, a smile on her face.
"You mean this one?" Solo pointed to the memo lying on his partners desk.
"Yup, that's the one, I promised I would pass it on." Slate said.
"So, you know who it's from?" Napoleon asked in disbelief.
"Of course, but the giver wanted it to be a surprise," Mark replied with a wink.
"So who……"
"You'll have to wait until Illya returns, we don't want you tipping him off," April added.
Napoleon studied his friends for a moment, thinking about who the mystery person could be, a smile crept across his face as he considered the possibilities and finally settled on the most likely suspect; though he hadn't known of any early return from their assignment, they could be the only answer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Illya walked along The Mall, he was several minutes early and enjoying the sharp bite in the air; unlike most of his colleagues, the cold here didn't bother him. He carefully watched the few people who were hurrying along the path, their heads down and collars drawn up against the snow that was falling.
No one paid him any attention as he made his way towards Bethesda Terrace. 'The Mall' was such a generalised area, he wished, again, the note had been more specific, just where on The Mall would this rendezvous be?
He checked the time, it was nearly seven.
Suddenly an idea hit him, hoping he was right he turned around and picked up his pace. There was a particular spot on The Mall that was a favourite place of someone he knew, well, more of a favourite bench. It was under a particularly gnarled old tree and was where they enjoyed people watching and feeding the squirrels that were brave enough to approach for some treats.
As he approached, sure enough a figure was sitting on the seat, he knew immediately who it was and she wasn't expected back from her assignment for a few more days. When he approached, she rose and they embraced each other for several minutes, kissing deeply before letting each other go. It had been nearly two weeks since Illya had seen his girlfriend and he'd missed her.
"Becca, this is a surprise, you were not expected back until Tuesday."
"The assignment went smoothly and we finished early, there was no reason to stay so I thought I'd surprise you. I love walking here when it's snowed and I thought it was a perfect place to meet up."
"You certainly did that, It did not occur to me this rendezvous would be with you, well not until the last minute."
"Come on, much as I love being out here, let's get back to HQ and get warmed up," Rebecca replied as she hooked her arm around Illya's and together they walked through the falling snow towards UNCLE HQ.
