The Prompt: The works must be conceived with fire in the soul but executed with clinical coolness.
~~~ Joan Miro
……………..
The night air didn't try to hide the sound of a man running. Illya Kuryakin was oblivious to the waning daylight and the rows of Merlot grapes that flanked his path. On another day, without the nuisance of being chased by a gang of THRUSH, he might stopp to pluck a few grapes and contemplate their final destination. A Bordeux most likely, a wine that he actually did enjoy with the right meal.
None of that registered as he ran for his life, the cool exterior he had exuded recently when posing as a member of the crew inside the winery no longer necessary. It was a THRUSH satrapy, and Waverly wanted it destroyed. It had seemed a pity to Kuryakin to waste the building, not to mention the machinery. But he wasn't one to argue with the Old Man, and the place had been used for some very unsavory activities. Blow it up was his order, and that's what he was doing.
Well, he was running, because in a few minutes… make that seconds… the whole thing was going to explode into a mass of wood and wine and grapes. It was past quitting time so the building had been empty except for the bothersome guard; he had of course felt duty bound to alert some other guards once he saw the bomb. Once he saw Illya.
Mentally a clock was ticking down in Illya's brain and he wasn't nearly far enough away yet. The guard chasing him was certainly not out of danger.
It was going to be a very impressive explosion.
5..4..3..2..
The earth shook, sending debris into the air and across the open space between the building and the vineyard. Illya veered to his left and tucked himself into the dense foliage. The guard was not as prepared and was sent hurtling through the air to land in a bed of grapes.
The Russian did not go back to check on him. He continued running, hoping that no one was in pursuit as he headed away from the destruction and up into the hills that sheltered what remained of the vineyard. Someone would come in and salvage what they could, rebuild and produce wine again. It would be a pity to let this land and crop go to waste.
Napoleon was waiting at their agreed upon rendezvous location. The American had been responsible for cajoling his way into the winery as a buyer for a large distribution concern. THRUSH used the profits from the winery to finance decidedly heinous activity, and the building itself had witness torture and murder; that was why Waverly had ordered it destroyed.
The two agents exchanged knowing looks; each was safe and unharmed and the missions was accomplished. Napoleon had the information on several other operations that utilized a winery as a front, and he had also secured the routing numbers for the off shore banks being used to funnel the money into THRUSH's coffers. All in all, the mission was a success.
"That's a hot mess down there. How about you?" Napoleon didn't see any damage to his partner, but asking might produce a different story.
"I am fine. Everything went off without a … how do you phrase it? A hitch.
"I saw you being chased, something must have happened." Illya flinched imperceptibly. His job was to be cool and collected, and he was. He was also glad that running very fast was among his skills and talents.
"It was nothing, and I got a good workout in the process."
Napoleon decided he couldn't argue with that.
