“Tovarisch, does Mother Nature have something against us?”
“Against you and me, personally?” Illya screwed up his face trying to understand what his partner meant.
“Well no not exactly, it was more of a rhetorical question.”
Napoleon stood just inside the entryway to their apartment building with Illya positioned right behind him. Both men were holding suitcases and garment bags in their hands.
“To what Napoleon are you asking this rhetorical question then?”
“Look…” Solo pointed out to the street and he was obviously not happy.
Snowflakes were quickly drifting down and had already covered the sidewalk.
A few people scurried past; men holding newspapers over their heads women doing the same with their purses as they weren’t wearing overcoats, as most likely they were caught off guard.
“Isn’t it supposed to be the first day of spring?
“Oh, well yes is it,” Illya shrugged,” but why should a little bit of snow here matter to you? We are after all going on assignment to…”
“Don’t remind me,” Napoleon groused.” Guess we better go upstairs and unpack our winter coats. I didn’t think we’d need them until we got off the plane in Reykjavik. Let’s face it, with it being in the sixties and seventies here this past week, I was ready for spring and now this!”
“Speak for yourself,” the Russian held up his arm with his wool coat loosely draped on his arm beneath his garment bag.
Napoleon flashed him a surprised look. “You knew it was going to snow and you didn’t say anything to me?”
“One had to only look to the skies and see the grey clouds,”Illya shrugged.
“Don’t tell me, your babushka and her homespun weather prediction methods, right?”
“But of course,” Illya knowingly canted his head.” I told you before that she taught me to be observant of the types of clouds, the behaviour of animals and so forth.”
Napoleon looked him straight in the eye.”Well other than looking at the clouds, which don’t seem all that unusual for me I know damned well you weren’t near any animals today except for that cat of yours. There’s no way an indoor cat would telegraph the weather to you!”
“Think what you like,” Kuryakin shrugged. “You have often called me a smart Russian, have you not?”
“Well I’m going upstairs to unpack my coat and call a taxi to take us to headquarters,” Napoleon huffed. He set his suitcase on the floor and took off with his garment bag slung over his shoulder.
As his partner headed up the stairs, Illya pulled a small transistor radio from his pocket and switched it on.
“Well the weather forecasters got this one right cousins,” the radio disc jockey, Cousin Brucie said.” It’s snowing out there and looks like we’ll get the predicted five inches of the white stuff, so don’t put those galoshes and winter coats away just yet...”
“All you had to do was listen to the radio my friend, like I did,” Illya snickered to himself.
A voice echoed down the stairwell…
“I heard that you smart-ass Russian!”
“There you go calling me smart so it must be true,” Illya shouted back, knowing full well he’d annoyed his friend yet again.

Well a tropical assignment might not have Illya so happy as he tends to be uncomfortable in the heat. Either way it's a no win situation for either of them.
Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the story. :D

Date: 2016-03-21 07:32 pm (UTC)Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the story! I already finished writing the short affair for next week and am excited about it, even though I shouldn't be as everyone will probably not care for it. That's usually what happens to me. When I think a story stinks, people enjoy it. When I think it's good, it gets a lukewarm reception. LOL!

Date: 2016-03-21 09:15 pm (UTC)You know though it always amazes me when I am on my way to work and it's pouring or snowing or such and here are all these folks not dressed at all appropriately for the weather. I mean geeze nowadays they can just look up the weather on their ubiquitous smartphones. They are always gazing at them anyhow. ;-)
