As Solo and Kuryakin hurried through the dense green jungle terrain, Illya heard a scream come from behind him and turned to see his partner teetering, hanging forward while trying to hold himself up as he grimaced.
He scrambled to reach him, and kneeling beside him, Illya realized he must have crossed a trip wire, springing a trap. Napoleon’s thigh was impaled on a bamboo spike lashed to a branch that has swung at him.
“Get it out!” The American gasped.
Illya quickly examined the wound; there was so much blood.
“Not until I tie off your thigh. You’re bleeding a lot but you are lucky it did not get you a bit higher; if it hit the artery...well you would be dead by now.”
“Oh gee peachy, so since it didn’t hit the artery, will you please get it out of me? It really hurts.”
“I know it does; be patient. “Illya removed his belt and applied it as a tourniquet.
”Do you still have your flask with you?”
“In my breast pocket.”
“Take a drink, a big one.” As gently as he was able; Kuryakin pulled out the spike, trying not to cause his friend additional discomfort.
Napoleon saw stars, to say the least. “Well that went well, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to walk.”
“You have to, as I am not leaving you behind my friend. ” Illya removed his white shirt. “Give me the flask.”
He proceeded to pour some scotch on the wound before he wrapped his shirt around it and tied it off. That process elicited another hiss from Solo.
“Sorry, Now come, we must hurry,” Illya hefted the American to his feet with a grunt.
Side by side, they struggled through the jungle, breathless and tired until they finally neared the extraction point. In the distance they could hear the sound of helicopter blades cutting the air.
The last leg of their jungle trek, Illya hefted his partner over his shoulder to carry him as they needed to move quickly They only had a fifteen minute window and the chopper would only wait so long for them, though Illya was sure the pilot would push the time limit for as long as he could
Thankfully they arrived just as it landed and the UNCLE agents were helped on board.
As the helicopter rose into the air, a crew member immediately went about checking Napoleon’s wound, and gave him a shot of antibiotics to prevent infection. He unwrapped the what was left of Illya shirt, cutting away the the pant leg and after cleaning the wound as best he could, he rebandaged it.
At first the ride in the chopper was a bit bumpy, sort of like a rollercoaster, with the feeling of having your stomach in your throat. Once it made the transition to forward flight, things became pretty smooth.
“You okay, tovarish?” Napoleon saw his partner leaning back, looking breathless and a little green. “You’re not going to be airsick are you?”
That was a very rare occurrence for the Russian who was an outstanding pilot; being seasick on water was more his foible.
Illya snickered.“I will be fine, but I must say my friend, you need to lose a little weight.”
“Why you…”Solo stopped himself and started to laugh. “Well I may have put on a few pounds after my last vacation. if you’ll work out with me in the gym once I’m recovered, I promise I will. Scout’s honor.”
It was Illya’s turn to laugh. “You really need to stop saying Scout’s honor Napoleon, as every time you use that phrase I know you are lying.”
“You know me too well don’t you?” He tried smiling. “Okay, real deal. Work out with me in the gym for sure.
“Deal” Illya said. He closed his eyes, nodding off as usual.
“Do you two always talk like this after one of you is nearly killed?” The crewmember who’d bandaged Solo asked.
“Yes, pretty much a given,”Napoleon laid back his head as he was ready to close his eyes as well.
