((Went slightly over; sorry about that...))

It didn’t take too long for them to get the necessary equipment they needed, but as they headed to the building to search for the underground path, Napoleon’s thoughts turned to the possibilities of what could happen if they were unsuccessful.

Illya’s description of it as an “international incident” was a vast understatement, and Illya had known it; it had every possibility of escalating into war between the West and the Eastern Bloc.

The chill that Napoleon was feeling was nothing new; they had come close to war before—he and Illya had both been appropriately alarmed at the Cuban Missile Crisis back in ’62. For a horrible while, it had seemed as though the two partners were about to be thrust upon opposite sides, helpless to do anything other than keep THRUSH from making the situation worse.

They had survived ’62. And Napoleon knew they would have to find a way to survive this, too—the alternative was… unthinkable.

He was brought back to the present by Illya speaking to Valeriya.

“For your own safety, it is best if you stay out here while Napoleon and I attempt to find that underground room.”

She protested, naturally, but Illya was insistent. At last, she seemed to relent, and Illya turned to Napoleon with a nod. The American cast a quick glance back at her as they headed onwards.

“Do you think she’ll stay there?”

“For her own sake, I hope so,” Illya replied.

The thought was soon pushed from their minds; they had work to do inside.
