It wasn’t often that an UNCLE agent let down his guard, it simply wasn't a smart thing to do.
Yet Illya Kuryakin did just that; he’d gone to a jazz club in Greenwich Village, one that served alcohol. He’d ordered a shot of vodka as they carried a good brand and served it cold to boot.
There was a good jazz trio playing, with a pianist, a double bass player, a drummer and they were particularly good. They were so good that Illya was prompted to stay a little longer.
After ordering his third drink, nature called, and heading off to the men’s room; he was gone only a few minutes.
When Illya returned to his table, his drink was sitting there waiting for him and impulsively he downed it.
It didn’t take long before he realized something was wrong, very wrong. He felt woozy and sick to his stomach. He stood up, unsteady on his feet.
Being drunk on three shots of vodka was just not possible and he looked around the room for anyone suspicious….that’s when he saw her, sitting in the darkened corner.
It was Angelique, wearing a sky blue silk blouse and a tight black pencil skirt. She was draped atop a bar stool, looking as alluring as ever, though it had no effect upon the Russian.
If he could have growled, Illya would have but instead he turned towards the door. With a wobble he tried putting one foot in front of the other and staggered in the direction of the exit.
“Going somewhere Kuryakin?” She spoke from behind him now.
“Yes, preferably away from you,” he mumbled. “You did this to me, did you not?”
“Yes I did. Just a little payback for all the times you’ve eavesdropped on your partner and I when we’ve had one of our rendezvous. Are you some sort of voyeur? Do you get your jollies on listening to us make love?”
“Trust me when I say, I take no joy in it at all. I am merely looking out for my friend. Angelique, you are a member of the opposition and it is my job to protect Napoleon who at times can his own worst enemy when it comes to his choice of paramours.”
“Well I suppose darling when you put it that way I can let your persistence slide when it comes to our dear Napoleon. Though we are rivals in this little world of espionage, I do adore your partner.”
Angelique started to turn away but stopped herself. “Oh by the way it’s not poison, it was just a little something to increase the effects of the alcohol. Napoleon would never forgive me if I’d harmed his precious Soviet. You might have a hangover in the morning, but nothing more. Though you being Russian, vodka even doctored, might not do much to you at all. À bientôt, j'espère.”
“My heart be still,” Illya answered with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. He watched as she walked away from him, disappearing among the crowd in the smoke filled room.
He headed out the front door of the club, whistling loudly for a taxi.
A checkered cab pulled up curbside and Illya climbed in.
“Where to buddy?”
He hesitated; did he want to go home or to headquarters and have medical find out what she’d really slipped him. Though he hated the idea he decided it best to have himself checked out. The bitch could have been lying and actually given him some sort of slow acting poison.
“Well where to Mister, I ain’t got all night you know.”
“Sorry,” Illya slurred his apology. He gave the driver the address of Del Floria’s.
“Hey I know that place. It’s closed this time of night.”
“What was I thinking...yesss. D’you know the Masque Club on the same block?”
“Yep.”
“Take me there please.”
“You got it buddy….hey just do me a favor and don’t get sick in my cab?”
“I will en-deavor not to do so.” Illya tried not to slur this time.
Once arriving at his destination Illya went into the club, and took the secret entrance back to headquarters and up to the Medical wing. There Kuryakin’s stomach was pumped and blood tests were taken.
The end result, Angelique had told the truth, for once.
Regardless of what she’d done and asked, he would continue to keep a watchful eye over Napoleon, and himself as well.
